The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana’s Agona West Constituency has initiated a strategic reorganization and unity drive aimed at reclaiming political power in the 2028 general elections. This initiative follows their defeat in the 2024 elections, where they lost both the presidential and parliamentary seats to the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Recognizing the need for internal cohesion and a strengthened party structure, the NPP has embarked on a revitalization campaign centered around the construction of a new party office in Agona Nyakrom. This endeavor marks a significant step towards rebuilding the party’s base and fostering greater operational efficiency in areas outside the Agona Swedru township. The sod-cutting ceremony for the new office, held on a Wednesday, served as a platform for the party leadership to address the critical issue of unity. Alhaji Gibrine Tanko Yoye, the Constituency Chairman, stressed the importance of bringing back disillusioned party members who had distanced themselves due to various reasons contributing to the 2024 defeat. He emphasized that the party is at a crucial juncture and that internal bickering and blame games should be replaced by collaborative efforts to rebuild and strengthen the party. The new office, he explained, is a symbol of the party’s commitment to expanding its reach and improving accessibility for members, particularly those residing outside the Swedru enclave. This decentralization of operations aims to reduce logistical challenges and financial burdens on party members, fostering greater inclusivity and participation.
The theme chosen for the sod-cutting ceremony, “Laying the Foundation for Victory: Strengthening Our Base, Securing Our Future,” encapsulates the NPP’s strategic vision for the future. It underscores the importance of unity and a shared purpose as they prepare for the 2028 elections. With Agona Swedru comprising 16 of the 31 electoral areas in the constituency, the establishment of the Nyakrom office is seen as a pivotal move to bolster the party’s presence and facilitate activities in the surrounding areas. Nana Kwame Agyei, the Research and Elections Officer for the constituency, further elaborated on the new facility’s features, highlighting its administrative offices and conference room designed to facilitate various party activities. Mr. Yawson Otoo, a prominent party member, echoed the call for unity and emphasized the practical benefits of the new office. He highlighted how it would alleviate pressure on the existing constituency office in Agona Swedru and reduce operational costs for members. He urged party faithfuls to capitalize on what he perceived as the NDC government’s economic mismanagement and present a united front to recapture political power in 2028, including reclaiming the Agona West parliamentary seat. Mr. Otoo stressed that the party’s interests should supersede individual ambitions, emphasizing that a collective approach is crucial for achieving electoral success.
The event also garnered support from local traditional leadership. Nana Akufo IV, the Omankrado of Agona Nyakrom, speaking on behalf of the Omanhene, Okofo Katakyie Nyarku Eku X, welcomed the project and cautioned the party against internal divisions that could hinder their 2028 aspirations. This endorsement from the traditional authority underscored the significance of the project within the broader community and highlighted the importance of the NPP’s efforts to engage with local stakeholders.
