The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has initiated the registration process for supplementary delegates who will participate in the upcoming presidential primary slated for January 31, 2026. This registration exercise, commencing on August 26, 2024, is a direct consequence of a resolution passed during the party’s National Annual Delegates Conference held in Accra on July 19, 2024. This expansion of the voter register aims to incorporate new categories of party members, encompassing officials, elders, and patrons who meet the eligibility criteria outlined in Article 13 of the NPP constitution. This strategic move signifies the party’s commitment to broadening participation and inclusivity in the selection of its presidential candidate.

The newly eligible categories encompass a wide range of party stakeholders, reflecting the NPP’s desire to involve individuals with diverse experiences and contributions. Former regional and constituency executives, who possess valuable organizational knowledge and grassroots connections, are now eligible to participate. Members of the National Council of Elders and Patrons, esteemed figures within the party, bring their wisdom and historical perspective to the electoral process. Past Members of Parliament (MPs), ministers, and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), having served in various governmental capacities, offer their insights and understanding of national issues. Additionally, leaders and patrons of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON), representing the youth wing of the party, contribute the dynamism and perspectives of the next generation of NPP leaders.

The NPP has emphasized the importance of a meticulous and transparent registration process. All eligible individuals are urged to register their names with the appropriate organizational structures, including the National Secretariat, regional offices, constituency offices, and external branches, depending on their respective affiliations. This structured approach ensures that the registration process is organized and accessible to all qualified members. William Yamoah, Secretary to the Presidential Elections Committee, in a statement dated August 26, 2024, underscored the party’s commitment to a comprehensive and inclusive process.

To facilitate registration for external branch executives, an online link will be provided. This online platform simplifies the process for those located outside Ghana, ensuring their seamless participation in the electoral process. For other eligible members within Ghana, registration can be completed through their respective regional and constituency offices. This dual approach caters to the diverse geographical distribution of party members, promoting accessibility and inclusivity. The deadline for registration is set for Friday, September 19, 2024, providing ample time for eligible members to complete the process.

The NPP has further emphasized its commitment to ensuring the integrity and credibility of the voter register. The Presidential Elections Committee has pledged to conduct a thorough verification and validation exercise to ensure the authenticity of the register. This crucial step aims to eliminate any potential irregularities and maintain the highest standards of electoral transparency. By meticulously verifying the register, the party aims to build trust and confidence in the electoral process among its members and the wider public. This commitment to a credible and authentic register underscores the NPP’s dedication to democratic principles and fair elections.

The expansion of the delegate register and the stringent verification process highlight the NPP’s focus on inclusivity and transparency in its internal elections. By incorporating a broader range of party members, the NPP aims to strengthen its internal democratic processes and ensure that its presidential candidate has the support of a diverse and representative electorate. The party believes that this inclusive approach will lead to a stronger and more united party as it prepares for the 2026 general elections. The meticulous verification process reinforces the party’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of electoral integrity and ensuring a fair and transparent selection process for its presidential candidate.
