The Anambra State Command of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) recently made a significant arrest of five suspected illegal private security guards who were found in possession of three pump-action guns. This operation took place in Nteje, within the Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, as these individuals were allegedly setting up an illegal roadblock and extorting money from unsuspecting motorists. According to the state Commandant, Maku Olatunde, the aim of this action was not only to arrest the suspects but to also send a clear message regarding the presence of impersonators within the realms of private security. Their activities were causing severe disruptions and hardships for the road users, highlighting a pressing need for intervention.

The suspects arrested include Ekene Erigaka (27), Emeka Eze (28), Ugoma Prosper (20), Obiuto Eze (42), and Victor Nnadi (34), representing various locales such as Imo State, Anambra State, and Abia State. The arrest was made possible through credible intelligence that indicated that these individuals were operating under the guise of the “AVG Special Squad,” as denoted by their distinctive black T-shirts. Responding swiftly to this intelligence, NSCDC operatives collaborated with the Nteje Vigilante Group to apprehend the suspects at the unlawful checkpoint, effectively dismantling this illegal operation.

Initial investigations into the operations of these illegal security guards revealed that such fabricated checkpoints pose a significant threat to public safety. They are seen as facilitators of serious crimes such as robberies, abductions, and even targeted killings of both civilians and law enforcement agents. The Commandant, Maku Olatunde, emphasized that these actions contribute to the myriad of challenges that ordinary citizens face while trying to conduct their legitimate business activities. This statement underscores the urgency and importance placed on curbing criminal elements that exploit the weaknesses within the security system.

The NSCDC’s commitment to eradicating crime and criminality from the state remains unwavering. Commandant Olatunde praised the efforts of the Private Guards Company (PGC) Department for their proactive stance in identifying and apprehending these illegal operators. He reaffirmed that the presence of unlicensed security personnel would not be tolerated and assured that those engaging in such practices would face legal repercussions. This firm stance has broad implications for the management of security within Nigeria, particularly as the country grapples with increasing security challenges.

Olatunde’s remarks serve as a strong warning to all unlicensed security outfits that they are being closely monitored and will be held accountable for their illegal activities. He reiterated the importance of public collaboration, urging the residents of Anambra to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities involving private security firms to their nearest NSCDC office. This proactive approach by the NSCDC encourages a community-driven model of security, where the public plays an integral role in maintaining safety and reporting irregularities that could signal danger.

The NSCDC highlights its responsibility as the regulatory body overseeing private security operations. The Corps is committed to not only monitoring but also supervising the activities of private security companies in an effort to sanitize the industry. As crime continues to evolve, the need for stringent regulations and effective oversight has become increasingly evident. The NSCDC’s actions reflect a broader strategy aimed at addressing escalating security concerns across Nigeria, thus reinforcing its pledge to maintain peace and order in the state while protecting the interests of its citizens.
