The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) recently arrested four individuals suspected of vandalizing streetlight poles across various locations in Abuja. This operation was executed during the command’s routine night patrols, specifically by the Critical National Assets and Infrastructure Tactical team. The arrests were made as part of a broader initiative to protect critical infrastructure, showcasing the agency’s determination to uphold security in the capital city and maintain public safety for residents.

The first of the arrests occurred at 1am on November 27, 2024, in the Utako area, resulting in the apprehension of two suspects: Japheth Adams, 21, from Zango Kataf Local Government Area in Kaduna State, and Friday Ojo, 51, from Ojo Local Government Area in Lagos State. These individuals were caught in the act of vandalizing a medium-sized streetlight pole. The swift action of the NSCDC operatives highlights the proactive measures being implemented to tackle the issue of vandalism, which has been a growing concern in Abuja.

Following this, another operation led to further arrests at 2am on November 28, 2024, near the Moshood Abiola Stadium at the National Hospital Junction. Here, two more suspects, Ibrahim Aliyu, 19, from Nasarawa Local Government Area in Kano State, and Hassan Abdullahi, 23, from Zaria Local Government Area in Kaduna State, were arrested while dismantling two large streetlight poles. The prompt response and vigilance of the NSCDC operatives not only resulted in the capture of these offenders but also in the recovery of key evidence, including one medium-sized traffic light pole and two large ones.

As the investigations continue, the NSCDC has stated that all necessary legal processes will be followed to ensure that justice is served for the incidents of vandalism. Commandant Olusola Odumosu reiterated the organization’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding critical infrastructure in the FCT and highlighted the need for continued vigilance against such acts of vandalism. He emphasized the agency’s successful track record in deterring crimes related to public utilities and assets, reinforcing the message that such illegal activities will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Odumosu also delivered a stern warning to criminals engaged in vandalism and other illicit activities within the FCT. He made it clear that there will be severe consequences for individuals involved in such crimes, urging vandals, scavengers, and other lawbreakers to abandon their harmful practices. He asserted that the FCT would be transformed into a “no-go area” for criminal elements, outlining an aggressive strategy to eradicate these activities and ensure the safety of Abuja’s residents and property.

In his closing remarks, the commandant appealed to the citizens of Abuja for their cooperation, urging them to report any suspicious activities to the authorities. He assured residents that their identities would be protected, and that their information would be handled with the utmost confidentiality. By fostering a collaborative relationship between law enforcement and the community, the NSCDC aims to enhance its operational effectiveness and ensure that the FCT remains a secure and safe environment for all.
