Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has voiced his concerns regarding the ongoing neglect of the Ogun West Senatorial District by previous administrations, despite its significant contributions to the state’s economy. Speaking at the grand finale of the 2024 Oronna Day Celebration in Ilaro, Yewa South Local Government Area, the governor underscored the region’s strategic role as the state’s food basket and the largest non-oil revenue generator. He highlighted that his predecessors, for unspecified reasons, had largely overlooked this area when it came to developmental initiatives, often focusing on ceremonial ground-breaking events that did not lead to tangible project completions. Abiodun assured the audience that he had initiated changes to this narrative upon taking office, claiming pride in his administration’s accomplishments in transforming Ogun West into a more developed and appreciated region.
Under Abiodun’s leadership, various developmental projects have been introduced in Ogun West, demonstrating a commitment to improving the region’s infrastructure. One significant achievement mentioned was the reconstruction of the Ilaro-Owode Road, which has substantially reduced travel time between Yewa South and other local governments from over two hours to mere minutes. This focus on infrastructure is not limited to one project; the governor stated that at least one road has been commissioned in every local government within the zone, with many localities receiving even more attention. He emphasized the vital economic role of Ogun West, which hosts the Agbara Industrial Estate featuring over 500 industries, the largest limestone deposits in Nigeria, and the nation’s leading cement factory, establishing the district as a crucial hub for both industrial and economic activities.
Abiodun also shared updates on road projects currently underway, particularly the dual carriageway linking Atan, Lusada, and Agbara, noting that one lane has been completed with ongoing efforts to finish the second. This infrastructural progress is intended to not only enhance mobility but also to bolster the economic activities facilitated by these roads. The governor acknowledged the contributions of local stakeholders, including the Olu of Ilaro and the Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, and Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, in working toward improving the infrastructure and welfare of Ogun West residents. Their collective efforts are recognized as being vital for the region’s development initiatives.
In his address, Abiodun called on the citizens of Ogun West to collaborate with the government for further development, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in achieving lasting progress. Collaboration between the government and the people is critical to fostering sustainable advancement in the region. On the other hand, Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jubril, praised the state government for promoting community development and acknowledged the Oronna Day celebration not only as a means of cultural preservation but also as a significant driver for socio-economic growth in the area. This synergy between culture and community development is seen as essential for bringing the people together to foster unity and collaboration.
Additionally, a message from the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, delivered by Senator Iyabo Anisulowo, underscored the importance of the Oronna Day celebration as a moment to commemorate heritage and foster unity among residents. The emphasis on cultural activities and community events serves not only as a means of celebrating shared history but also contributes to the socio-economic fabric of Ogun West. Such events can inspire hope and invigorate communal ties, consequently enhancing local development efforts and encouraging active participation in the governance process.
Ultimately, Oba Olugbenle expressed gratitude to Governor Abiodun for making strides in extending developmental projects throughout Yewaland, indicating a welcomed change in the narrative of neglect. He urged the governor to prioritize the commissioning of a housing estate in Ilaro, indicating that specific initiatives aimed at improving the living standards of residents are necessary for continuing progress. Such calls for action highlight the important relationship between governance and community needs, advocating for a focus on housing and other essential services as part of the ongoing efforts to uplift the quality of life for citizens in Ogun West. As collaborative efforts continue, the hope is that infrastructure and community relations will support sustainable growth, ensuring that this vital region finally receives the attention it rightfully deserves.
