Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, has been honored by the Odogbolu Local Government in Ogun State, Nigeria. Chairman Babatunde Diya announced the renaming of Old Benin Road to Tobi Amusan Road during a meeting with a delegation from the Ikoto Community, Amusan’s hometown. This gesture recognizes Amusan’s remarkable achievement in setting a new world record of 12.12 seconds in the 2022 World Athletics Championships, making her the first Nigerian athlete to achieve such a feat. The renaming of the road is not only a celebration of her sporting success but also a symbolic recognition of her role as a source of inspiration for the younger generation in the Yoruba community and beyond. Diya highlighted Amusan as a shining example of Yoruba resilience, discipline, and global excellence, embodying values that bring pride to the nation.

The decision to honour Amusan arose from a courtesy visit by elders and stakeholders of the Ikoto Community to Chairman Diya’s office. The delegation presented three key requests: the rehabilitation of the Old Benin Road, official recognition of Amusan as a proud daughter of Ikoto, and resolution of boundary disputes with the neighbouring Ijebu North East Local Government Area. The renaming of the road fulfills one of these requests, signifying the local government’s commitment to recognizing and celebrating its prominent citizens. Diya’s administration aims to immortalize Amusan’s achievements, providing a lasting reminder of her contribution to athletics and her inspirational impact on aspiring athletes.

The rehabilitation of Old Benin Road, now Tobi Amusan Road, addresses another key concern raised by the Ikoto Community. Chairman Diya acknowledged the importance of this road as a vital link to surrounding communities and an alternative route to the Ijebu Ode–Mojoda–Epe Expressway. He assured the delegation that their request would be forwarded to the Ogun State Government for consideration and action. This demonstrates the local government’s commitment to infrastructural development and responsiveness to the needs of its constituents. The road’s rehabilitation will not only improve transportation and connectivity but also contribute to the area’s economic development.

Furthermore, Diya highlighted the establishment of new offices within the local government structure, reflecting a focus on strategic development initiatives. These offices include Arts, Culture and Tourism; Lands and Boundaries Matters; and Public-Private Partnerships. These additions are aimed at promoting cultural heritage, resolving land-related issues, and fostering collaborations to drive economic growth within the Odogbolu Local Government Area. The creation of these specialized offices underscores the administration’s commitment to a multifaceted approach to development, addressing various aspects of community well-being.

Tobi Amusan’s accomplishment holds significant meaning not only for the Yoruba community but also for Nigeria as a whole. Her world record in the women’s 100m hurdles marked a historic moment for Nigerian athletics, placing the nation on the global sporting map. As she prepares to lead the Nigerian contingent at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, she carries the aspirations of a nation eager to witness further triumphs on the international stage. Her continued success serves as a powerful symbol of national pride and inspires future generations of Nigerian athletes to strive for excellence.

The renaming of Old Benin Road to Tobi Amusan Road is a fitting tribute to a remarkable athlete who has brought honour to her community and country. It represents a tangible recognition of her achievements, transforming a vital piece of local infrastructure into a lasting memorial to her world-record-breaking performance. Beyond the symbolic gesture, the road’s rehabilitation signifies practical improvements for the community, enhancing connectivity and fostering economic development. This dual approach of symbolic recognition and practical action underscores the Odogbolu Local Government’s commitment to honouring its distinguished citizens while simultaneously addressing the needs of its constituents.
