In an effort to enhance transportation affordability and accessibility in Ogun State, the government has announced a process for converting petrol-powered vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) engines. According to the state Commissioner for Transportation, Olugbenga Dairo, this initiative is vital for reducing transportation costs for citizens while promoting a cleaner, more sustainable fuel option. The conversion process is structured in three stages to ensure thoroughness and compliance with safety standards. This systematic approach aims to facilitate a seamless transition for vehicle owners opting for CNG as a viable alternative to conventional petrol fueling.
The outlined conversion process begins with a pre-inspection of the vehicles, which is conducted in collaboration between the Vehicle Inspection Services and the technicians at CNG conversion centers. This initial assessment is crucial for determining the vehicle’s readiness for conversion. Following this, vehicle owners must obtain approval for a computerised vehicle inspection, which further ensures that the vehicles meet the necessary specifications for conversion. Finally, the conversion itself is carried out, culminating in certification by the onsite conversion manager, ensuring that all standards have been met throughout the process.
To support this initiative, the Ogun State government has established two designated conversion centers and three gas refilling stations. The conversion centers—Nigeria Gas Transport Solution Ltd and NEXT GEN LTD—are strategically located in Abeokuta to make them easily accessible for residents. Additionally, the state provides three gas refilling stations: Green Fuel, Gasco Marine, and Nipco Gas, all situated along key thoroughfares to facilitate convenient access for converted vehicles. These facilities are essential for encouraging the adoption of CNG-powered vehicles by ensuring that refueling options are readily available.
In his statement, Commissioner Dairo engaged with the public by encouraging inquiries about the conversion process. He specifically advised citizens to reach out to Gboyega Ademehin, the Director of Vehicle Inspection Services at the Ministry of Transportation, for any further clarifications regarding the conversion and certification procedures. This outreach underscores the government’s commitment to transparency and its willingness to assist residents as they explore alternative fuel options for their vehicles.
Additionally, the commissioner promoted the availability of E-Bike battery recharging stations, a provision from the administration led by Governor Dapo Abiodun. This initiative aims to further diversify transportation options by making electric mobility accessible and affordable.
