The resounding victory of Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, at the Appeal Court has ignited a wave of jubilation across the state, solidifying his mandate and further cementing the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s dominance in the region. Governor Okpebholo, accompanied by his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, APC stalwarts, enthusiastic youths, and market women, embarked on a triumphant motorcade through the streets of Benin City, the state capital, to celebrate the court’s affirmation of his electoral victory. This latest legal triumph marks the third consecutive defeat for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in its attempts to challenge the governorship election results, following losses at the initial election, the Election Tribunal, and now the Appeal Court. Governor Okpebholo attributed these successive victories to divine intervention, expressing his unwavering belief that God remains in control of Edo State and will continue to guide its people towards prosperity.

Governor Okpebholo’s victory speech resonated with confidence and defiance. He declared that the PDP’s repeated legal challenges only provided more opportunities for the people of Edo State to celebrate their unwavering support for the APC. He expressed unwavering optimism about prevailing at the Supreme Court should the PDP decide to pursue further legal action. Furthermore, he extolled President Bola Tinubu’s support for Edo State, highlighting the tangible progress being witnessed under his administration. Pledging continued allegiance to the President, Governor Okpebholo asserted that the people of Edo State would overwhelmingly endorse President Tinubu for re-election in 2027, emphasizing that the voice of the people cannot be silenced, not even by the persistent efforts of the PDP.

The Governor’s address also contained strong criticisms against the PDP. He accused the opposition party of resorting to underhanded tactics, alleging the use of misappropriated funds in attempts to influence the judiciary. However, he commended the judges for upholding truth and justice in the face of these alleged attempts. Governor Okpebholo further condemned PDP leaders for their unfounded claims of a stolen mandate, drawing parallels to similar accusations made by national figures like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, suggesting a coordinated, yet ultimately futile, strategy of forming an alliance against the prevailing political tide. He emphatically declared the end of the PDP’s era in Edo State, promising continued development and progress under his leadership.

To illustrate his commitment to infrastructural development, Governor Okpebholo highlighted ongoing projects, including the construction of a flyover at Ikpoba-Hill, with plans for two additional flyovers in the pipeline. These projects, he emphasized, represent his administration’s dedication to improving the state’s infrastructure and enhancing the lives of its citizens. The Appeal Court’s ruling, delivered by Justice Mohammed Danjuma, unequivocally upheld Governor Okpebholo’s election, dismissing the PDP’s appeal for lack of merit. The court found that the PDP failed to substantiate its claims of electoral malpractice or provide compelling evidence of any wrongdoing during the September 21, 2024, governorship election.

The Appeal Court’s comprehensive dismissal of the PDP’s appeal effectively validates the credibility of the electoral process and reinforces the legitimacy of Governor Okpebholo’s mandate. The court’s decision sends a clear message that unsubstantiated allegations and attempts to undermine the democratic process will not be tolerated. This resounding victory for Governor Okpebholo and the APC is expected to further consolidate their political stronghold in Edo State and pave the way for continued implementation of their developmental agenda. The sustained support from the people, coupled with the judiciary’s affirmation of the election outcome, positions Governor Okpebholo to focus on governance and delivering on his promises to the electorate.

The triumph at the Appeal Court signifies more than just a legal victory; it represents a resounding endorsement of Governor Okpebholo’s leadership and the APC’s vision for Edo State. With the legal challenges effectively addressed, the focus now shifts towards governance and the implementation of policies and programs aimed at improving the lives of the people. The ongoing infrastructure projects, including the construction of flyovers, underscore the government’s commitment to development and modernization. As Governor Okpebholo embarks on the next phase of his administration, he carries with him the renewed mandate and the unwavering support of the people, poised to lead Edo State towards a brighter future.
