Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has issued a cautionary message to traditional rulers within the state regarding the limits of their powers, particularly in matters pertaining to disputed lands. He emphasized the importance of respecting traditional jurisdictions, especially during a ceremony that marked the coronation of Oba Adebayo Takuro as the Olusan of Ayesan in Odigbo Local Government. Represented by the deputy governor, Dr. Olayide Adelami, Aiyedatiwa underscored the significance of traditional institutions as vehicles for fostering peace, unity, and harmony among communities. His emphasis was on the need for traditional rulers to exercise their authority judiciously, with the intention of avoiding conflict or misunderstanding within their domains.

The governor reminded traditional rulers of their roles as custodians of culture and customs, close to their communities and therefore in a position to prioritize collective peace over personal interests. Aiyedatiwa encouraged a stance of restraint and caution when exercising traditional powers, aiming to strengthen the cohesion of their respective areas. He clearly delineated that the authority of traditional rulers should be directed towards enhancing the lives of their communities rather than exacerbating disputes over land or minor appointments. It was a call for responsible leadership in traditional governance that aligns with the welfare of the people.

In conjunction with this message, the governor also touched upon the government’s commitment to safety and security in Ondo State. He noted investments in the Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as Amotekun, which aims to advance public safety through better equipment and human resources for security operations. Additionally, he assured that the administration was backing other security agencies with logistical support to aid their efforts in safeguarding citizens. This point highlights a dual approach where traditional authority and governmental support are aimed at creating a harmonious and secure environment for the populace.

During the coronation ceremony, Oba Takuro expressed deep gratitude to the state government for the recognition granted to the Olusan stool, acknowledging the community’s long struggle of over six decades to achieve this milestone. His remarks reflected a historic moment not just for himself, but for the entire community of Ayesan, marking an achievement that aligned with the larger ambitions of traditional leaders in the region. By receiving a first-class status within the Obaship hierarchy, the community felt a renewed sense of pride and acknowledgment from the state, fostering a spirit of collaboration with the regional government.

In his address, Takuro highlighted the various developmental needs of the community, specifically mentioning the Oniparaga/Ayesan Road as a crucial infrastructure project. He believed that better connectivity among the communities would lead to increased economic activity and improve the living standards for the residents. He also outlined a broader vision that encompasses improvements in roads, schools, hospitals, and other public amenities, stressing that these developments are essential for social progress. His forward-looking perspective emphasizes the crucial role of traditional institutions in negotiating and advocating for community development in partnership with the government.

In conclusion, Oba Takuro pledged to uphold and promote the cultural identity of Ayesan during his reign while committing to work together with the state government. This partnership is envisaged as a means to bolster infrastructural development and to foster economic growth for the betterment of the people in his jurisdiction. As both the governor and the traditional institutions align their objectives towards peace, unity, and progress, there is a clear intention to build stronger communities reflective of collective aspirations, ensuring that the welfare of the people remains paramount in all governance endeavors. The interplay of traditional authority and governmental support is crucial in realizing these aspirations through collaborative efforts.
