The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has found itself at the center of a controversy surrounding the alleged sidelining of former President John Agyekum Kufuor. A video circulating online appears to show Mr. Kufuor expressing concerns about being ignored by the current NPP leadership, sparking debate and raising questions about the party’s treatment of its elder statesmen. However, Ofoase-Ayirebi MP and former Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has vehemently denied these claims, characterizing the video as “heavily edited and misleading” and part of a deliberate attempt to sow discord within the party. He insists that Mr. Kufuor remains a highly respected figure within the NPP and is consistently consulted on important party matters.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah’s rebuttal emphasizes the ongoing communication and consultation between the NPP leadership and former President Kufuor. He highlighted the extensive consultations undertaken by Lawyer Frank Davies and his committee with Mr. Kufuor, during which the former president’s views were sought on various proposals. This, according to Mr. Nkrumah, demonstrates the party’s commitment to valuing and incorporating the wisdom and experience of its senior members. He urged party members to refrain from propagating the edited video and its misleading narrative, emphasizing the importance of accurate representation and responsible communication within the party.

The controversy surrounding Mr. Kufuor’s alleged marginalization arises from a conversation he had with Abetifi MP, Bryan Acheampong, which was subsequently recorded and disseminated online. In the video, Mr. Kufuor appears to express feelings of being overlooked by the current leadership. This has fueled speculation and concern among some party members, leading to calls for greater inclusivity and respect for the party’s elders. Mr. Oppong Nkrumah’s response seeks to address these concerns and reassure party members of Mr. Kufuor’s continued relevance and influence within the NPP.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah further underscored the party’s commitment to engaging with Mr. Kufuor by detailing the consistent invitations extended to him for council meetings and consultations on major party decisions. He pointed out that even when Mr. Kufuor is unable to attend these meetings, his office regularly communicates and provides input, ensuring his voice is heard and his perspectives considered. This constant communication, according to Mr. Nkrumah, demonstrates the party’s respect for Mr. Kufuor’s experience and wisdom.

The incident highlights the potential for miscommunication and manipulation in the digital age, where edited videos and selective narratives can easily spread misinformation and create unnecessary divisions. It underscores the importance of responsible information sharing and the need to verify information before drawing conclusions. Mr. Oppong Nkrumah’s response serves as a reminder of the importance of clear communication and the need to address concerns within the party through open dialogue rather than resorting to divisive tactics.

The NPP now faces the challenge of managing this controversy and reassuring its members that all voices, especially those of its respected elders, are valued and heard. The party must ensure that internal communication channels are effective and transparent to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. This episode serves as a valuable lesson on the importance of unity and respect within the party, particularly in the lead-up to crucial political events where a unified front is essential for success. Furthermore, it emphasizes the responsibility of party members to promote accurate information and avoid actions that could undermine the party’s cohesion and stability.
