The Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) has directed all local government workers in Osun State to resume their duties following a Court of Appeal judgment that reinstated the All Progressives Congress (APC) elected council chairmen. This directive aims to restore stability and functionality to the local government administration after a period of political uncertainty and contention following a fresh local government election conducted in February 2025. The election results, which initially favored the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), were subsequently overturned by the Court of Appeal, reinstating the previously elected APC chairmen.

The ALGON’s directive, conveyed in a letter signed by the Acting Director General, Evan Enekwe, on behalf of the National President, Bello Lawal, signifies the national body’s recognition and full support for the reinstated APC chairmen. The letter, addressed to the Osun State ALGON Chairman, Hon. Samuel Idowu, emphasizes the association’s commitment to upholding the rule of law as established by the Court of Appeal’s judgment. This affirmation aims to solidify the legitimacy of the APC-led local government administration and encourage a smooth transition back to normal operations.

ALGON’s commitment to restoring normalcy extends beyond mere recognition. The association has pledged to collaborate with the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) to facilitate the return of local government staff to their respective roles. This collaborative effort seeks to ensure a unified and coordinated resumption of duties, minimizing disruptions and promoting a cohesive working environment within the local government system.

The association’s message also emphasizes the importance of managing the situation with caution, tolerance, and maturity. Recognizing the sensitive political climate, ALGON calls for restraint from all stakeholders, urging them to prioritize peaceful coexistence and avoid actions that could escalate tensions or reignite conflict. This appeal for peace reflects ALGON’s commitment to ensuring a stable and harmonious transition, allowing the reinstated administration to focus on governance and service delivery.

Furthermore, ALGON has expressed its condolences to the family of Hon. Abbas, a member who lost his life during the period of political unrest. This gesture acknowledges the tragic consequences of the political turmoil and underscores the association’s concern for the well-being of its members and the community at large. By condemning the violence that led to Hon. Abbas’ death and praying against future tragedies, ALGON reaffirms its commitment to peaceful resolution and the preservation of human life.

In essence, ALGON’s directive represents a decisive step towards restoring order and stability within Osun State’s local government administration. By recognizing the reinstated APC chairmen, collaborating with NULGE to ensure the return of staff, appealing for peaceful coexistence, and condemning the violence that marred the electoral process, ALGON seeks to foster a conducive environment for effective governance and service delivery to the people of Osun State. The association’s emphasis on the rule of law and its proactive engagement with stakeholders demonstrate its dedication to upholding democratic principles and ensuring the smooth functioning of local governance.
