As the upcoming Local Government elections on November 2 draw near in Abia State, Governor Alex Otti is encouraging voters to support candidates aligned with his vision, regardless of their political party. The call for unity transcends party lines is a key message, emphasizing that the focus should be on candidates who prioritize effective governance and development. During an event at the Aba South Local Government Headquarters, where he inaugurated a newly rebuilt administrative office complex, Otti underscored the importance of grassroots governance as a fundamental aspect of holistic development. His appeal highlights a desire for civic engagement, urging residents to inquire about candidates’ platforms and to actively participate in the electoral process.

In his remarks, Otti acknowledged the necessity of informed citizenry in selecting leaders who can drive local government effectiveness. Citing the critical role of administration at the grassroots level, he interpreted good governance as a prerequisite for achieving the state’s broader development goals. He expressed confidence in the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) to facilitate a seamless election process, vowing governmental support for the commission, assuring the electorate of an opportunity to cast their votes freely and responsibly. Otti’s assertion that citizens historically favor capable candidates, irrespective of party affiliation, aims to reinforce a culture of accountability and effectiveness among elected officials.

Otti also touched on the historical context of local government structures, recalling the damages inflicted during the 2020 End SARS protests. The failure to restore important facilities like the Aba Town Hall is described as a regrettable lapse that highlights the need for responsive leadership during crises. He praised the Mayor of Aba South, Chief Uche Nwogu, for successfully rebuilding the administrative office, signaling a renewed commitment to preserving local government assets. This restoration not only reflects the governor’s vision but also symbolizes the local government’s dedication to addressing community needs through improved service delivery.

The event generated comments from various leaders, including Emmanuel Emeruwa, the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, who spotlighted the Labour Party’s ongoing support for Governor Otti. Emeruwa articulated the importance of unity and collaboration amidst party differences, reaffirming their collective responsibility towards effective governance for Abia State. He lauded the restoration efforts of the administrative office complex as an emblem of the administration’s progress under Otti’s leadership, intertwining the aspirations of the party with the operational realities of local governance.

Mayor Uche Nwogu elaborated on the vision for the Aba South Local Government, aiming to model it on a self-sustaining enterprise that reduces dependence on federal allocations. Describing the previous state of the office as dilapidated and in need of significant repairs, he conveyed pride in aligning with Otti’s administrative style to revitalize the local governance structure. Nwogu’s approach underscores a shift towards efficiency and an aspiration for the local government to become a benchmark for other councils in the state, reinforcing the theme of transparency and accountability in administration.

The event also featured remarks from the Senior Special Assistant on Homeland Security, Mr. Chukwunenye Alajemba, emphasizing initiatives to enhance emergency response systems in Abia State. With the rebuilding of emergency service ambulances and integrated services for fire, security, and healthcare, the project aims to establish a world-class emergency response framework in the state. This advancement complements Governor Otti’s vision for an upgraded and responsive governance structure that prioritizes citizen welfare. The gathering also showcased a diverse audience, including state executives, industry leaders, and community representatives, underscoring the collaborative spirit needed to propel Abia State towards holistic development and effective local governance.
