Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, reaffirmed his unwavering support for President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, particularly the removal of the fuel subsidy, a decision Otti characterized as courageous and long overdue. He emphasized that the current economic hardships are a necessary consequence of years of irresponsible fiscal policies and that steadfastness will ultimately lead to a more stable and prosperous economy. This declaration of support came during a visit by former Abia State Governor and current Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, and Senator Chris Adighije, both of whom commended Otti’s performance and encouraged him to maintain his close relationship with the President.

Otti likened the current economic situation to a necessary correction after years of irresponsible behavior. He defended Tinubu’s policies, arguing that the removal of the fuel subsidy, while painful in the short term, is essential for long-term economic stability. He referenced his previous writings, highlighting his consistent advocacy for subsidy removal, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. Otti stressed that he and Tinubu share a longstanding friendship that transcends political affiliations, and their agreement on key economic issues reinforces his support for the President’s agenda. He dismissed those speculating about future elections, emphasizing the importance of focusing on the present and addressing immediate challenges rather than engaging in premature political maneuvering.

The Governor acknowledged the work of his predecessor, Orji Uzor Kalu, particularly in the area of road construction, recognizing the importance of maintaining and improving infrastructure. He highlighted his administration’s focus on revenue generation through infrastructural development, particularly in Aba, citing the example of a resident who donated N200 million in support of the ongoing road projects. Otti emphasized the economic benefits of improved infrastructure, noting the increased business activity and the positive impact on the “velocity of money” in Aba. He also expressed his intention to extend similar development efforts to other parts of the state, ensuring economic activity continues beyond daylight hours.

Otti’s administration has prioritized revitalizing Aba’s economy through infrastructure upgrades. The Governor illustrated this with the anecdote of a substantial donation from an Aba resident, inspired by the administration’s commitment to road reconstruction. This demonstrates the tangible impact of the government’s efforts and the renewed confidence in the local economy. Otti further underscored his commitment to economic growth by prioritizing the extension of business hours through improved lighting and infrastructure in other areas of the state. This initiative aims to replicate the vibrant economic activity observed in cities like Lagos and Abuja, contributing to overall economic prosperity.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, during his visit, praised Otti’s performance, particularly the improvements to the road network connecting Igbere to Umuahia, which has significantly reduced travel time. He affirmed his long-standing friendship with Otti and expressed his unwavering support for the Governor’s leadership. Kalu also echoed the sentiment of supporting President Tinubu, urging Otti to maintain a close relationship with the President. He emphasized that his support for Otti transcends political considerations and is rooted in a shared commitment to the progress of Abia State. Kalu’s endorsement carries significant weight given his own experience as a former governor and his current position as a senator.

Senator Chris Adighije joined Senator Kalu in commending Governor Otti’s performance, expressing pride in the Governor’s achievements and reaffirming his continued support. He emphasized that his support is not driven by partisan politics but rather by a genuine desire for the progress of Abia State. Adighije also commended President Tinubu’s performance at the national level and joined Kalu in urging Otti to maintain his support for the President. The visit and the endorsements from both senators underscore the broad-based support for Otti’s administration and his close alignment with the federal government’s economic policies.
