Abia State Governor Alex Otti has announced the renaming of the Abia State Polytechnic in Aba to honor the late Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, the first governor of the state, during a commendation service held at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia. This decision comes after the passing of Dr. Onu in April at the age of 72. Otti emphasizes that Onu’s contributions to both the state and the nation were significant, reflecting an unwavering commitment to development and progress. He cited Onu’s pivotal role in establishing various educational institutions in the state, including the Abia State Polytechnic, the Abia State College of Education (Technical), and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, showcasing Onu’s vision as a strategic leader.

Otti spoke about the need to immortalize Dr. Onu’s contributions, stating that the Abia State Polytechnic will henceforth be known as Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba. He underscored the critical link that Onu recognized between educational institutions and the development of human capital essential for economic growth. The governor’s remarks highlight a vision of leadership that goes beyond mere political ambition, positioning Onu as a pioneer who understood the importance of creating a robust educational framework for the community.

The governor also reminisced about Onu’s act of patriotism in 1999, when he prioritised national unity over personal ambition by stepping back from his presidential bid. Otti characterized Dr. Onu as a dedicated Nigerian, who valued the country’s democratic future more than his aspirations for higher office. His acknowledgment of Onu’s qualifications to lead the nation reflects a deep respect for the former governor’s capabilities and intentions. Otti praised Onu as an important advocate for democracy, a true nationalist, and someone who transcended ethnic and religious divides to view every Nigerian as a citizen deserving equal opportunities.

Furthermore, Otti expressed the profound loss that Onu’s passing has caused, creating a void in the social and political fabric of both Abia State and beyond. He encouraged those in mourning, particularly Onu’s family and the people of Ebonyi State, to find strength and solace in their memories of him. The governor urged the community to emulate Onu’s life dedicated to service and integrity, reinforcing the notion that great leadership is built on a foundation of commitment to the greater good.

The service also featured a homily from Bishop Michael Ukpong of the Umuahia Catholic Diocese, who stressed the importance of living responsibly and highlighted the many ways in which Dr. Onu positively influenced the lives of others. The bishop pointed to Onu’s legacy, notably his role in the rebuilding of the Abia Tower of Peace, the establishment of the Broadcasting Corporation of Abia, and his service as a National Ambassador, marking him as a figure who left an indelible mark on the state and the nation. Ukpong’s remarks added a spiritual dimension, calling upon attendees to reflect on their lives and the impact they can have on others.

The commendation service drew notable dignitaries, including Anyim Pius Anyim, the chairman of the National Burial Planning Committee, among others, indicating the widespread respect held for Dr. Onu. This event serves not only as a tribute to a life well-lived but also as a moment for reflection on the values of leadership, service, and community action that Onu embodied. In honoring his memory, the governor and community aim to inspire future generations to emulate the late leader’s dedication to education, unity, and democracy, fostering a narrative of hope and progress for Abia State and Nigeria at large.
