A clarion call for African leadership in decarbonizing the global shipping industry resonated from Abuja, Nigeria, where the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, addressed the African Strategic Summit on Shipping Decarbonisation. Oyetola underscored the urgent need for Africa to transition from passive observer to active participant in shaping global maritime policies, particularly in light of the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) revised greenhouse gas emission reduction strategy. He emphasized that decarbonization is not solely an environmental imperative but a crucial economic strategy, essential for Africa’s competitiveness in the evolving global trade landscape. The Minister stressed the strategic importance of the summit, urging attendees to move beyond discussions and forge concrete solutions that will steer Africa towards a sustainable and prosperous blue economy.
