On Monday, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde inaugurated 480 Amotekun Forest Rangers in a ceremony held at the National Youth Service Corps orientation camp in Iseyin, Iseyin Local Government Area. This initiative is part of the governor’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the security of residents within the state, reflecting his administration’s continued investment in safety and protection since he took office in 2019. During his address, Makinde emphasized that significant challenges remained in addressing issues such as kidnapping and banditry, particularly in forested areas. He credited the creation of the Western Nigeria Security Network, known as Amotekun, initiated by governors from the South-West states, as a pivotal achievement in the region’s security architecture.
Makinde acknowledged the effectiveness of the Amotekun operatives, which began operations in November 2020, stating that their presence has become indispensable to the state’s security efforts over the years. He highlighted the establishment of the Forest Rangers as a crucial step forward in combating illegal activities in the state’s forests and ensuring the safety of farmers and those engaged in commerce. The newly created unit of 480 rangers will operate within their local government areas, thus increasing the overall Amotekun Corps to 2,500 members.
The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to providing necessary resources and financial support to ensure the Amotekun operatives can effectively carry out their duties. He announced that all Amotekun members would be enrolled in a life insurance scheme and that hardship allowances would be increased, reflecting a concern for their welfare and safety in the line of duty. Ensuring that these operatives are adequately equipped and financially supported underlines the administration’s acknowledgment of the challenging environment they operate in.
In response to the commandant’s request for hardship allowances specifically for the forest rangers, Makinde clarified that this would extend to all Amotekun Corps, indicating a thoughtful approach to their compensation. He expressed an intention to employ more Amotekun personnel and develop additional capacity for aerial surveillance, including the establishment of two airstrips in Igbeti and Otu within the next year. This development will facilitate enhanced intelligence gathering and operational efficiency for ground troops, further reinforcing the state’s security capabilities.
Makinde’s plans for these airstrips and the commitment to aerial surveillance mark a significant advancement in modernizing Oyo State’s security apparatus. By integrating technology such as drones into their surveillance efforts, the government aims to stay a step ahead of potential security threats. The proactive measures being undertaken, including the establishment of the Forest Rangers and the planned aerial operations, reflect a holistic approach to tackling the multifaceted security challenges faced by the state.
Overall, the recruitment of the 480 Amotekun Forest Rangers is a crucial step towards fortifying Oyo State’s security setup. With key plans for financial backing, enhanced operational capabilities, and a focus on the welfare of security personnel, Governor Makinde is taking a comprehensive approach aimed at preserving the safety of residents and safeguarding key economic activities. The phased development of technology and operational units illustrates a strategic commitment to ensuring that security agencies operate efficiently in the face of growing challenges, ultimately fostering a safer environment for all citizens in Oyo State.
