Adebo Ogundoyin, Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly and Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures, addressed key constitutional issues, including financial autonomy for state legislatures and the implementation of state police. Ogundoyin expressed optimism about achieving financial autonomy, citing positive feedback from governors and ongoing engagement with the Governors’ Forum. He distinguished between tiers of government and arms of government, emphasizing the constitutional mandate for the legislature’s autonomy. While acknowledging past challenges, he highlighted the growing independence of legislatures, evidenced by their support for autonomy during recent constitutional reviews. On the issue of state police, Ogundoyin voiced strong support, attributing resistance to political motivations and emphasizing the critical role of state police in enhancing national security. He cited the success of regional security initiatives like Amotekun in the Southwest as evidence of the potential effectiveness of state police, advocating for its implementation alongside the existing federal police force.

Tax Reform Bills and the Need for Wider Consultation

Ogundoyin addressed the ongoing debate surrounding tax reform bills, emphasizing the importance of positive reforms that promote competition, productivity, and fairness. While expressing support for reforms, particularly concerning Value Added Tax (VAT), he underscored the need for extensive consultation with all stakeholders, including state governments, traditional rulers, and various interest groups. He acknowledged concerns regarding the potential impact on different states and called for a consensus-based approach to ensure equitable distribution of tax revenue. Ogundoyin stressed that adequate information and engagement are essential to build support for tax reforms and prevent unexpected negative consequences. He urged the federal government to continue its consultations until a mutually acceptable solution is reached.

The Future of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)

Amidst internal crises within the PDP, Ogundoyin expressed confidence in the party’s continued existence, dismissing suggestions of a one-party system. He emphasized the vital role of opposition parties in a healthy democracy, highlighting the need for checks and balances to ensure effective governance. Ogundoyin acknowledged the challenges facing the PDP, but expressed optimism about the party’s ability to resolve internal conflicts and emerge stronger. He pointed to existing conflict resolution mechanisms within the party, including the Board of Trustees and the National Executive Committee (NEC), and urged party leaders to prioritize reconciliation. Ogundoyin stressed the importance of unity within the party to effectively compete in future elections, acknowledging the long timeframe available for rebuilding and repositioning.

Clarifying the Stance on Political Appointments and Cross-Party Collaboration

Ogundoyin clarified his position on political appointments, emphasizing the importance of meritocracy and the prerogative of the presidency to select competent individuals for government positions. He praised the appointment of the FCT Minister, highlighting his proven track record and contributions to national development. Ogundoyin stressed that cross-party collaboration is essential for delivering dividends of democracy and serving the interests of the people. He reiterated his own experience as Chairman of the Conference of Speakers, emphasizing the ability to work across party lines based on merit and capability. However, Ogundoyin cautioned against the potential for a dominant party to create an environment where alternative voices are marginalized, suppressing healthy political discourse and potentially leading to a one-party system.

He described his greatest achievement as serving with integrity and setting a positive example for other young people aspiring to leadership roles.
