The Concerned Parents of Regional Model Basic School in the Volta Region have lodged a formal complaint with Volta Regional Minister James Gunu, seeking the dismissal of the Ho Municipal Education Director. They allege that the director’s actions have created a hostile learning environment, contributing to a decline in students’ academic performance. The parents’ petition details a range of grievances, including the arbitrary transfer of competent teachers, undue influence in Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and school elections, the forced implementation of the Bridge-IT program, and the municipal education office’s usurpation of PTA administrative functions. Furthermore, the parents claim the director has resorted to threatening students with expulsion if their parents challenge her decisions, a tactic they interpret as intimidation.

Central to the parents’ concerns is the alleged disruption caused by the director’s interference in staffing decisions. They argue that the transfer of qualified teachers, without adequate justification, has negatively impacted the quality of education provided to their children. The removal of experienced educators, they contend, has left a void that has yet to be adequately filled, leading to inconsistencies in teaching and a subsequent decline in student achievement. This disruption, they believe, is further exacerbated by the director’s intrusion into PTA and school elections, undermining the democratic processes within the school community and creating an atmosphere of distrust.

The parents also raise serious questions regarding the imposition of the Bridge-IT program and the associated financial burdens. They express their disapproval of being compelled to participate in this program without proper consultation or a clear understanding of its benefits. Coupled with this is the municipal education office’s takeover of PTA administration, which they view as an overreach of authority and a disregard for the parents’ role in their children’s education. This perceived usurpation of power has further fueled their discontent and strengthened their resolve to seek the director’s removal.

Adding to their list of grievances, the parents allege that the director has resorted to intimidation tactics, threatening to expel students whose parents dare to question her actions. This, they argue, is a blatant attempt to silence dissent and suppress any opposition to her leadership. Such behavior, they believe, is unacceptable and further reinforces their call for her immediate removal. They emphasize the importance of a safe and supportive learning environment, free from threats and intimidation, where students can focus on their studies without fear of reprisal.

The parents also demand transparency in the school’s financial management and question the unilateral imposition of what they consider exorbitant examination fees. They call for a thorough investigation into these financial practices, expressing concerns about the lack of accountability and the potential misuse of funds. Furthermore, they raise concerns about the hiring of an external individual to set examination papers, a task they believe should be entrusted to the school’s qualified teaching staff. This practice, they argue, not only raises questions about the integrity of the examination process but also undermines the expertise and professionalism of the teachers.

Presenting the petition to Regional Minister James Gunu, Emmanuel Adenyo, a representative of the Concerned Parents group, urged swift action to address their concerns. He emphasized the urgent need for the director’s removal to restore a conducive learning environment and ensure the well-being of the students. The parents hope that the Regional Minister will take their grievances seriously and conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations. They believe that the removal of the director is crucial for restoring trust and ensuring the future success of Regional Model Basic School. They are hopeful that their collective action will lead to positive changes and a more supportive educational environment for all students.
