The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) finds itself at a critical juncture, grappling with internal strife and the looming threat of self-destruction. Concerned PDP Stakeholders, a group of influential party members, have convened to address the escalating crisis and chart a course for the party’s future. Their primary concern revolves around adherence to the party’s constitution and the equitable distribution of power, particularly concerning the selection of the presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.
The Stakeholders, in a communique read by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, identified the root cause of the party’s woes as the disregard for key constitutional provisions, specifically those pertaining to the role and authority of the National Secretary. They highlighted Sections 36(1)(a)(b) and (c), Sections 47(3)(5), and 48(1)(i) of the PDP constitution, along with a Supreme Court judgment concerning the National Secretary’s position, as being consistently violated. This disregard, they argue, fueled the internal divisions that significantly weakened the party in the lead-up to the 2023 elections.
To prevent the party’s complete disintegration, the Stakeholders proposed a series of decisive actions. First and foremost, they demanded that the PDP unequivocally zone its 2027 presidential candidacy to the South. This strategic move aims to ensure fairness, inclusivity, and adherence to the principle of federal character, which promotes equitable representation across different regions of the country. They believe this will mitigate the perception of marginalization and foster unity within the party.
Furthermore, the Stakeholders reaffirmed the legitimacy of Senator Sam Anyanwu as the National Secretary of the PDP, as confirmed by the Supreme Court judgment. They insisted that Anyanwu’s authority, particularly his exclusive right to issue notices for party meetings, must be respected. This includes notices for the National Convention, National Executive Committee, National Caucus, and the National Working Committee. Any notices or actions not sanctioned by him, including communications to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), are declared null and void. This emphasis on adhering to constitutional procedures aims to restore order and prevent further disputes within the party.
Acknowledging the legal implications of removing a National Executive Council member, the Stakeholders emphasized that only a properly constituted National Convention holds the authority to remove Senator Anyanwu from his position. They called for the Acting National Chairman and the National Secretary to jointly issue a notice to INEC, outlining the agenda for a National Executive Committee meeting. This adherence to due process is seen as crucial for upholding the rule of law and maintaining the party’s credibility.
The Stakeholders expressed their unwavering commitment to the PDP and urged all members to prioritize the party’s stability and future. They called for a unified front against any attempts to destabilize the party and encouraged support for the National Reconciliation Committee, chaired by Senator Bukola Saraki. This committee is tasked with mending internal divisions and fostering a sense of shared purpose within the party.
The Concerned PDP Stakeholders believe that these measures, if implemented, will not only resolve the current crisis but also pave the way for a stronger, more unified, and electorally competitive PDP in the future. They emphasize the importance of adherence to the party’s constitution, respect for legal processes, and a commitment to equitable representation as the cornerstones of a revitalized and successful party. The future of the PDP, they argue, depends on embracing these principles and working together to rebuild trust and unity within its ranks. The 2027 presidential election looms large, and the party’s ability to present a united front will be crucial for its success.
