The National Working Committee (NWC) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the timetable for the zonal congresses scheduled for 2025. This decision marks a significant step in the party’s preparations for upcoming elections and needs to be understood in the context of internal organization and leadership restructuring. According to a statement from the party’s spokesman, Debo Ologunagba, this approval came after the National Executive Committee (NEC) consented to hold the zonal congresses, which are crucial for electing new Zonal Working Committees and National Ex-Officio members.

The NWC’s approval was formalized during its 592nd meeting, coinciding with the end of the current tenures of various Zonal Executives across different regions—namely the South-South, South-East, South-West, North-Central, and North-East. Ologunagba’s statement outlined a detailed timetable and sequence of events essential for ensuring a smooth electoral process for the party’s zonal committees. The proactive approach reflects the PDP’s attempt to maintain order and discipline within its ranks ahead of significant electoral contests.

Key dates provided in the timetable include the sale of forms for various positions spanning from November 18 to December 18, 2024. This is followed by the deadline for submitting completed forms by January 17, 2025. The screening process is scheduled for January 25, with the opportunity for appeals occurring on February 1. Notably, the timeline governs crucial procedural points leading up to the congresses and highlights the importance of participation from the party’s membership, underlining a transparent and rigorous selection process for new leaders.

The dates for the congresses have been specified as well, with those in the North-East, South-East, and South-South set for February 22, 2025. As the process unfolds, any appeals regarding the outcomes of these congresses must be filed by February 25. The North-Central and South-West congresses are scheduled for March 22, with appeals due by March 26. This strategic planning indicates the party’s commitment to thoroughness and consideration of member grievances throughout the electoral process, thus enhancing internal democracy.

Further, the PDP urged all aspiring candidates to engage with the Directorate of Organization and Mobilization or the Directorate of Finance for specific details regarding application fees and other pertinent information. This transparent communication from the party leadership emphasizes their intent to foster an inclusive environment where all interested members can participate effectively in the leadership selection process. The encouragement for open dialogue is important in keeping the party’s foundations strong and its members informed.

In conclusion, Ologunagba also stressed the significance of unity among PDP leaders, stakeholders, and members as they navigate this forthcoming transition. The successful organization of these zonal congresses will play a crucial role in the party’s future—whether in presenting a united front in the face of electoral challenges or maintaining member engagement and loyalty. The PDP appears poised to capitalize on this momentum as it prepares for the Congresses, signaling a crucial time in its strategy to rejuvenate and galvanize its ranks ahead of the next general elections.
