Chief Gboyega Oguntuwase, the former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, expressed the party’s determination to displace the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from power. Despite the support of former Governor Ayodele Fayose for incumbent Governor Abiodun Oyebanji, Oguntuwase emphasized that the PDP is focusing on revitalizing itself rather than expending energy on internal disputes like suspending Fayose. Instead, he stated that the party’s primary goal is strategizing for future electoral victories without relying on Fayose, who has consistently indicated his opposition to the PDP in light of his favorable view of the APC’s governance.

During a conversation with journalists in Ado Ekiti, Oguntuwase outlined the challenges ahead for the PDP under the new leadership of Dare Adeleke, the chairman of the state caretaker committee. He reiterated that the party aims to evolve beyond its past dependency on influential figures like Fayose, who publicly backed Oyebanji’s re-election during the Udiroko Festival. Oguntuwase underscored that prioritizing organizational strength and strategy is more crucial for the PDP than engaging in disputes over Fayose’s conduct. His stance reflects a clear shift toward focusing on the future rather than past grievances.

In response to concerns from Fayose’s loyalists about perceived exclusion from the party’s restructuring efforts, Oguntuwase defended the composition of the caretaker committee established by the PDP National Working Committee. According to him, the committee was formed with careful consideration of various factors, making it essential to avoid integrating individuals who may undermine the party’s strategic interests. His remarks suggest that Fayose’s potential infiltration of party plans could pose a significant threat to the PDP’s electoral strategy and unity.

Oguntuwase provided reassurance that the establishment of local government caretaker committees under Adeleke’s leadership is fostering a renewed sense of purpose within the party. He noted that these committees are actively engaged in grassroots mobilization, which is critical for the PDP’s campaign efforts as they prepare for future elections. The energy generated from these local leadership structures is seen as a positive step toward building a robust support network for the party’s outreach and electioneering activities.

Moreover, Oguntuwase criticized Fayose’s expectation to be involved in the party’s strategic planning, labeling it contradictory given his public proclamations of support for the opposition. The former chairman posited that enabling Fayose to influence party strategy would not only be self-defeating but would also potentially compromise the PDP’s operational integrity. His convictions reflect a broader strategy of consolidation within the PDP, aimed at maintaining independence from factions that may not align with the party’s current objectives.

In conclusion, Oguntuwase’s leadership vision for the PDP indicates a clear commitment to rebuilding and repositioning the party as a formidable contender against the APC in Ekiti State. By focusing on grassroots engagement and shunning internal conflicts with disloyal members, the PDP seeks to cultivate an environment conducive to positive change and electoral success. As the party navigates these challenges, the ultimate goal remains a strong, united front capable of reclaiming governance for the people of Ekiti.
