Partners In Health (PIH) Liberia celebrated a significant milestone recently, marking ten years of operation in the country, which began during the devastating Ebola outbreak in 2014. At the invitation of former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, PIH committed itself to addressing the health crises that plagued Liberia during this tumultuous time. Dr. Maxo Luma, the Executive Director of PIH Liberia, characterized the organization’s decade-long journey in the country as transformative, asserting that impactful change has been achieved in the health sector since their inception. The celebration allowed them to reflect on their accomplishments and consider their future role in enhancing Liberia’s health system.
Dr. Luma emphasized that the Ebola outbreak unveiled deeper issues within Liberia’s health landscape, as fatalities could not solely be attributed to the virus. The outbreak exposed a frail healthcare infrastructure that needed rebuilding and reinforcement. Following the World Health Organization’s declaration that Liberia was Ebola-free in 2016, PIH positioned itself to collaborate with the government in improving and stabilizing healthcare, particularly in the remote areas of southeastern Liberia, including Maryland County, where they primarily operate. The organization’s commitment reflects a long-term aspiration to ensure that health services are accessible to all citizens.
Over the years, PIH has made concrete contributions to health policy and framework development in Liberia. Since 2017, they have been instrumental in aiding the government in constructing the National Essential Package of Health Services, a pivotal endeavor towards achieving universal health coverage. Furthermore, they have played a critical role in revising the National TB Program’s strategic plans, introducing efficient treatment regimens, and supporting initiatives that ensure enhanced care for tuberculosis patients. These multifaceted efforts highlight PIH’s dedication to fostering both immediate and sustainable health solutions in Liberia.
Education and training for healthcare professionals have also been vital areas of focus for PIH in Liberia. The organization has collaborated with the Liberian Board of Nursing and Midwifery to update the community-based post and midwifery curriculum. This initiative aims to elevate the standards and quality of education for future nurses and midwives, ensuring that the healthcare workforce is well-equipped to meet the demands of the population.
