The tragic military helicopter crash on August 6th prompted a nationwide outpouring of support for the families of the victims, culminating in the establishment of the Children Support Fund. This fund, coordinated by Dr. Valerie Sawyerr, Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs, serves as a vital resource for the children left behind, ensuring their future well-being despite the devastating loss of their parents. The response from individuals and organizations across Ghana has been overwhelming, with contributions exceeding GHS 3.5 million and US$20,000 as of August 28th. This significant amount underscores the nation’s commitment to supporting these children and providing them with the opportunities they deserve.

The period between August 19th and 28th saw a surge in donations from various entities, reflecting the widespread impact of this tragedy and the collective desire to assist the affected families. Among the contributors were prominent organizations such as Ghana Airport Ltd, ARB Apex Bank PLC, STL Foundation, Olam Agric, Fidelity Bank Ghana, ADB Bank, GLICO General Insurance, and the National Insurance Commission. These donations, along with numerous others from individuals, have substantially boosted the fund’s resources, laying a solid foundation for the children’s future. The ongoing influx of contributions demonstrates the enduring compassion of the Ghanaian community.

To facilitate continued support and ensure transparent management of the fund, designated bank accounts have been established at Stanbic Bank Ghana Limited (Stanbic Heights Branch, Accra). Donations can be made in both Ghanaian Cedis (GHS) and US Dollars (USD) to dedicated accounts, providing convenient options for contributors both within and outside the country. Additionally, cheques and bank drafts can be made payable to “Children Support Fund 6825,” offering an alternative method for those wishing to contribute. These multiple avenues for donation reflect the commitment to accessibility and ease of contribution for all who wish to support the children.

President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized the importance of the fund in safeguarding the future of the eight children who lost their parents in the crash. He highlighted the fund’s purpose as ensuring that these children are not deprived of essential support and have access to the opportunities their parents envisioned for them. The President’s endorsement underscores the national significance of this initiative and reinforces the government’s commitment to supporting the affected families. This public commitment adds further weight and legitimacy to the fund, encouraging continued public support.

The funds collected will be strategically allocated to cover the children’s education, healthcare, and general welfare from primary school through tertiary education. This comprehensive approach ensures that the children receive the necessary support to pursue their educational aspirations, maintain their health, and navigate their lives with the resources they require. The inclusion of technical training and medical insurance further emphasizes the commitment to providing holistic support, addressing not only immediate needs but also long-term well-being.

This comprehensive support system aims to empower the children to build fulfilling lives despite their tragic loss. By addressing their educational, healthcare, and general welfare needs, the fund seeks to create a stable and nurturing environment for them to thrive. The long-term vision extends from primary school to tertiary education, encompassing technical training and medical insurance to equip them with the tools and resources they need to succeed. This commitment to long-term support demonstrates a dedication to ensuring the children have the opportunity to reach their full potential, honoring the legacy of their parents.
