The Press Union of Liberia (PUL), in collaboration with the Liberia Media Lawyers Network, is taking decisive legal action against individuals implicated in the recent assaults, harassment, intimidation, and molestation of two Liberian journalists. These separate but interconnected incidents, involving physical and verbal attacks on Nyantee Togba of OK FM and Sylvester Choloplay of the Spoon Network, underscore a growing concern about the safety and security of journalists in Liberia. The PUL is resolute in its commitment to ensuring that these acts of violence against journalists do not go unpunished, sending a strong message that such behavior will not be tolerated.
The first incident occurred on November 17, 2024, when journalist Nyantee Togba was assaulted by a group of Unity Party (UP) loyalists during a National Executive Committee meeting in Paynesville. Notably, the meeting was attended by the party’s political leader and current Liberian President, Joseph Boakai. This incident raises questions about the political climate and the potential for partisan violence targeting journalists covering political events. The PUL’s pursuit of legal action in this case aims to hold those responsible accountable and deter future attacks on journalists covering political gatherings.
The second incident, on December 9, 2024, involved journalist Sylvester Choloplay, who was assaulted by a staff member or security personnel of Representative Dixon Seboe on the grounds of the Capitol Building. During the altercation, Choloplay’s recording device was temporarily confiscated. This assault followed a live-streamed interview on social media platforms, during which Representative Seboe exhibited aggressive behavior towards Choloplay. The PUL has expressed deep disappointment in Representative Seboe’s conduct, emphasizing the expectation that elected officials should exemplify responsible behavior rather than resorting to violence and intimidation against journalists.
The PUL condemns Representative Seboe’s actions, characterizing them as unbecoming of a public official. They highlight the importance of respecting the role of the press in holding both political and private power accountable. The seizure of Choloplay’s recording device further underscores the attempts to suppress journalistic inquiry and freedom of the press. The PUL is particularly concerned that such actions by a member of the legislature set a dangerous precedent and could embolden others to engage in similar behavior.
The PUL views these attacks on Togba and Choloplay as symptomatic of a disturbing trend of increasing hostility and aggression towards journalists. The organization is committed to protecting the rights of journalists and ensuring that perpetrators of such violence are brought to justice. This commitment reflects a broader effort to safeguard freedom of the press and maintain a safe environment for journalists to carry out their crucial work. The PUL’s stance is crucial in a democratic society where the press plays a vital role in informing the public and holding those in power accountable.
While advocating for the protection of journalists, the PUL also urges its members to adhere to professional standards and prioritize their safety. This involves assessing potential risks and avoiding situations that could endanger them, while simultaneously upholding the public’s right to information. This delicate balance requires journalists to exercise caution and sound judgment without compromising their duty to report on matters of public interest. The PUL’s commitment to legal action, coupled with its advice to members, reflects a multi-pronged approach to address the escalating violence against journalists in Liberia and ensure a safe and conducive environment for the practice of journalism.
