Puma Energy Ghana, a prominent player in the energy sector, has been actively engaging with local communities, particularly focusing on women, food vendors, and hawkers in busy markets to promote safer practices regarding Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG). This initiative is in alignment with government efforts to raise awareness about the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) and the advantages of LPG usage, especially in terms of health and safety. The inaugural community awareness event took place at the Madina Lorry Park, which is known for its hustle and bustle with market activities. Over 350 participants, including market women and commercial drivers, attended, contributing to a dynamic interactive session where information was shared regarding the benefits and safe handling of LPG as an alternative cooking fuel.

During the event, Puma Energy distributed educational leaflets and facilitated discussions about LPG safety. They also recognized and rewarded key food vendors with essential cooking equipment, including stoves, gas lighters, aprons, T-shirts, and tablecloths, aiming to improve their businesses while advocating for cleaner energy solutions. The CRM initiative, launched by the National Petroleum Authority alongside the Ministry of Energy, focuses on a streamlined LPG distribution system that allows users to exchange empty cylinders for filled ones at designated centers. This model supports the government’s ambition to transition from environmentally harmful cooking methods to safer, more accessible LPG solutions, with a target of reaching 50% usage by 2030.

Benard Ohene Amoah, the LPG Manager for Puma Energy Ghana, emphasized that safety is a core value for the company, vital to their business ethos and operations. The commitment to stakeholder safety complements their objective of increasing LPG usage to foster improved health and environmental outcomes. With these engagements in local markets, Puma Energy not only aims to educate consumers on safe practices but also to advocate for a broader societal shift towards cleaner cooking fuels. Deputy General Manager Steveria Kadangwe highlighted the importance of markets as hubs of activity that serve as ideal platforms for disseminating crucial safety information to the community.

To further promote the CRM initiative during the awareness activities, participants had the chance to exchange old LPG cylinders for new ones, mirroring the official exchange process. At the Madina Lorry Park event, approximately 100 new cylinders were efficiently exchanged, marking the success of the CRM in providing a reliable means of obtaining LPG. Such streamlined systems also reflect Puma Energy’s sustained commitment to enhancing safety in LPG usage, ensuring that the transition to cleaner energy is both accessible and convenient for local consumers.

Looking ahead, Puma Energy plans to continue these community engagement sessions, scheduling more events for October and December to reach various market centers nationwide. Their ongoing efforts emphasize not only promoting the proper and responsible use of LPG but also aim to energize communities by reducing environmental impacts associated with traditional cooking methods. With the establishment of over 35 retail outlets and 16 community exchange centers, Puma Energy is poised to distribute more than 20,000 filled LPG cylinders by the end of the year 2024, further strengthening their contributions to energy safety and accessibility in Ghana.

Puma Energy’s broader mission reflects their commitment to sustainable energy practices that actively benefit communities, providing innovative and reliable fuel solutions. As a leading energy company in Ghana, with a growing presence of over 60 retail outlets, they are set on fostering an environment that embraces the safe use of LPG while promoting cleaner cooking habits.
