Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State announced the suspension of Dr. Moses Ekuma, the state Commissioner for Health, for a period of three months due to inadequate performance in managing the state’s health ministry. During a citizens’ engagement forum aimed at discussing the 2025 budget proposal, Nwifuru expressed his disappointment with the health sector’s current state, despite the presence of a significant number of qualified health professionals. He emphasized the importance of accountability and responsibility in positions of authority, highlighting that effective governance requires dedication and results-oriented efforts.

Nwifuru underscored the government’s substantial investment in the health sector, which has not translated into tangible outcomes. He pointed out a specific case where a contractor was paid N3 billion to supply vital equipment and consumables for primary healthcare centers, yet there has been minimal improvement in healthcare delivery. The governor’s remarks reflected a broader concern about the efficiency and accountability within the health ministry, as he expressed frustration over the continued struggles of primary healthcare and general hospitals despite significant financial outlays aimed at enhancing their infrastructure and service delivery.

To address these issues, Nwifuru planned to establish inspection committees to oversee health facilities across Ebonyi State, ensuring that the resources allocated are utilized efficiently and effectively. He acknowledged previous interventions such as the drug revolving fund initiative for general hospitals, which reportedly achieved a 60 percent delivery rate. Nwifuru’s focus was on making health facilities fully functional and accessible, enabling residents in rural areas to receive immediate medical care, which would subsequently lead to better referral processes to specialized medical institutions.

The governor also proposed a model where health facilities will be administered independently by health professionals, allowing them to generate funds that can be used for salaries and operational costs, thereby fostering a self-sustaining healthcare system. Nwifuru drew parallels with the state broadcasting service, which he indicated would also operate as a public liability company, meant to generate its own revenue. This approach aims to reduce waste and improve efficiency in both sectors, highlighting the governor’s commitment to reforming public services in Ebonyi State.

In a stern warning, Nwifuru reiterated that he expects commissioners and public officials to take their roles with utmost seriousness, indicating that more sanctions could follow for those exhibiting inefficiency. His message to these officials emphasized the need for engagement and commitment, reinforcing the idea that complacency would not be tolerated within his administration. The governor voiced a strict ultimatum regarding their performance, reminding them that the time for frivolity had long passed and the responsibility of service delivery lies squarely on their shoulders.

At the citizens’ forum, various stakeholders praised Governor Nwifuru’s inclusive governance style and expressed their unwavering support for his administration.
