The Bono Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has initiated a comprehensive security enhancement strategy to combat the rising tide of armed robberies plaguing the region’s highways. The strategy, implemented in response to a fatal robbery incident that claimed the life of a driver at Atronie, a suburb of Sunyani, involves a multi-pronged approach focusing on increased police presence, enhanced surveillance, improved communication infrastructure, and road development. The core of this strategy is the establishment of new police posts at strategic locations and known robbery hotspots along vulnerable stretches of highway, such as the Sunyani–Goaso route. Coupled with intensified regular patrols, these measures aim to deter criminal activity, restore public confidence, and provide a tangible sense of security to commuters, residents, and farmers who have expressed growing concern over the escalating insecurity in the area.

The gravity of the situation and REGSEC’s commitment to addressing it were underscored by a recent visit led by the Bono Regional Minister, Mr. Joseph Addae Akwaboa. The tour of robbery-prone areas allowed for a firsthand assessment of the implemented security measures and provided an opportunity to directly engage with communities affected by the surge in criminal activity. Mr. Akwaboa’s meeting with the chief and residents of Atronie, the site of the recent fatal robbery, served as a platform to not only reassure the community of the government’s commitment to their safety but also to outline the specific actions being taken to combat crime. The establishment of seven new police posts between Atuahenekrom and Atronie, coupled with the increased visibility of police patrols, represents a significant step towards creating a more secure environment.

Beyond increasing police presence, REGSEC is pursuing a technologically driven approach to crime prevention. Plans are underway to install surveillance cameras at strategic points along the highways. This initiative aims to provide real-time monitoring of activities, enhance the ability of law enforcement to respond promptly to incidents, and gather crucial evidence for investigations. Recognizing the critical role of communication in effectively combating crime, the government is also addressing the challenge of poor mobile network coverage. Efforts are underway to engage mobile network providers to extend their services to areas identified as robbery hotspots. This improved connectivity will enable quicker reporting of criminal activities, facilitating swift responses from law enforcement and potentially preventing crimes in progress.

Moreover, REGSEC is focusing on empowering the public to play a more active role in maintaining security. Signage displaying police contact information will be erected along the highways, providing readily accessible means for citizens to report suspicious activity or request assistance in emergencies. This initiative acknowledges the vital role of community involvement in crime prevention and seeks to foster a collaborative approach between law enforcement and the public. The comprehensive strategy adopted by REGSEC acknowledges the interconnectedness of various factors contributing to the security challenges.

The poor state of the roads has been identified as a contributing factor to the vulnerability of commuters and a hindrance to effective law enforcement response. Recognizing this, the government has prioritized the inclusion of the Sunyani–Goaso stretch in its road development plans, with construction slated to commence the following year. Improved road infrastructure will not only facilitate quicker response times for law enforcement but also contribute to the overall development of the local economy. This commitment to infrastructure development underscores the government’s holistic approach to addressing the region’s security challenges.

The response from the local community to REGSEC’s interventions has been positive. Nana Kwabena Gyan, the Nifahene of Atronie, expressed gratitude for the proactive measures taken by the government and emphasized the importance of expediting the road reconstruction project. The community recognizes that improved infrastructure will play a crucial role not only in deterring armed robbery but also in boosting economic activity in the area. This collaborative spirit between the government and the community is essential for the long-term success of the security enhancement strategy. The multifaceted approach adopted by REGSEC demonstrates a commitment to addressing the root causes of insecurity and fostering a safer environment for all.
