Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has recently taken a significant step in supporting education within the region by awarding scholarships to 100 students of Wigwe University, located in Isiokpo, Ikwerre Local Government Area. This initiative comes shortly after the institution officially commenced its academic activities following the tragic demise of its founder, the late Dr. Herbert Wigwe. The university honors the legacy of Dr. Wigwe, who, alongside his wife and son, perished in a helicopter crash in California on February 9, 2024. In a gesture of remembrance and commitment to his vision, the governor’s scholarship aims to provide educational opportunities to a new generation of learners.

The unfortunate passing of Dr. Wigwe raised concerns about the future of the university he founded, as many feared that the institution’s plans might falter without its visionary leader. However, during the university’s official opening ceremony, Governor Fubara expressed his determination to carry on Dr. Wigwe’s philanthropic vision for the university. Representing the governor, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ovy Chukwuma, emphasized the government’s commitment to partnership with the university, stating that they were ready to ensure that Dr. Wigwe’s dream would continue to thrive and make a positive impact.

In his address, Governor Fubara highlighted the importance of the university’s curriculum and the positive socio-economic impacts it is expected to generate for the state and beyond. He noted that the establishment of Wigwe University signifies a pivotal shift in the landscape of higher education in the region, which he believed would enhance the quality of both undergraduate and postgraduate education. Fubara showed his gratitude for Dr. Wigwe’s contributions and committed to ensuring that the institution’s impact would endure over time, thus preserving his legacy.

The scholarship initiative, as articulated by the Commissioner, aimed to prioritize Rivers State indigenes by granting 70 out of 100 scholarships to local students, while the remaining 30 percent was allocated to non-indigenes residing within the state, reflecting a commitment to inclusiveness and diversity. This significant support is expected to empower students and help fulfill Dr. Wigwe’s vision of creating an educational environment that fosters talent and leadership for progress within the African continent.

Moreover, the Acting Vice Chancellor of Wigwe University, Prof. Marwan Al-Akaidi, underscored the foundation’s guiding principles, asserting that the institution aims to harness Africa’s potential for prosperity. He articulated a broader goal for the university: to cultivate thoughtful and fearless leaders who can one day influence governance and societal progress on the continent. The spirit of Dr. Wigwe’s vision serves as a source of inspiration for stakeholders, promoting a united quest for excellence in education and leadership.

In conclusion, the launching of Wigwe University and the accompanying scholarship awards reveal a tangible commitment to advancing educational opportunities in Rivers State while honoring the legacy of a dedicated philanthropist. Through collaborative efforts between the state government and the university, there is a shared aspiration to create a transformative educational experience that empowers future leaders. The ongoing developments promise to change the dynamics of higher education in the region, ensuring that the memory of Dr. Herbert Wigwe and his vision for a prosperous Africa live on.
