President Olusegun Runsewe of the Nigeria Golf Federation has made significant strides in the development of golf in Nigeria by launching the first-ever online-based golf training program in Africa. Runsewe expressed his joy in realizing a concept that was once merely a dream, highlighting a personal journey that began when he felt that golf in Nigeria was too localized. His exploration took him to South Africa, where he engaged with professional golfers and discovered a gap in the IT-based training for Nigerian golfers. Recognizing this deficiency, he took proactive measures by facilitating the travel of two Nigerian pros to Botswana for specialized training. The successful completion of this initiative had substantial benefits, as these trained pros returned with valuable knowledge and skills to impart to their peers.
Despite the initial success, Runsewe acknowledged that the need for continued exposure and training for Nigerian golf pros was essential. However, logistical challenges such as the expense of bringing foreign professionals to Nigeria or sending local pros abroad limited these opportunities. To bridge this gap, he collaborated with Botswana’s resident pro, Kelosiwaag Mpoh, who agreed to come to Nigeria at a reduced cost to share modern training techniques with about 15 Nigerian golfers. This initiative not only facilitated the diffusion of knowledge but also demonstrated the growing recognition of the need for technological integration in sports coaching.
The online training program aims to break down geographical barriers, making quality golf instruction accessible to a wider audience in Nigeria.
