The Social Democratic Party (SDP) finds itself embroiled in a significant internal crisis as its National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, along with the National Auditor, Nnadi Clarkson, and National Youth Leader, Chukwuma Uchechukwu, have been suspended from their positions. The suspensions, announced by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Aiyenigba, stem from serious allegations of financial impropriety, including unauthorized financial transactions, self-enrichment schemes, and the diversion of party funds without the approval of the National Working Committee (NWC). These accusations paint a picture of a leadership allegedly prioritizing personal gain over the party’s welfare, potentially jeopardizing its stability and future prospects. The party’s swift action underscores the severity of these allegations and its commitment to addressing internal corruption.

The SDP’s statement highlights a series of actions by the suspended Chairman, Shehu Gabam, that triggered the investigation and subsequent suspensions. Gabam is accused of submitting an unauthorized financial statement to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and publishing a summarized version in newspapers, actions that raised red flags within the party. This unauthorized disclosure not only bypassed established internal protocols but also potentially misrepresented the party’s financial standing to both regulatory bodies and the public. The SDP’s proactive notification of law enforcement agencies following this discovery signals their seriousness in pursuing accountability and transparency within their ranks.

The allegations of financial mismanagement revolve around a substantial sum of money, amounting to hundreds of millions of naira, including funds generated from the sale of nomination forms for the 2023 elections and various donations received by the party. These funds, intended to support the party’s electoral activities and organizational functioning, were allegedly diverted for personal use by the suspended officials. This misappropriation not only undermines the party’s financial stability but also betrays the trust placed in the leadership by party members and supporters who contributed these funds. The magnitude of the alleged misappropriation raises serious questions about the extent of the financial irregularities and their potential impact on the SDP’s ability to operate effectively.

In response to these allegations, the SDP has taken decisive action to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure accountability. An interim panel has been established with the mandate to conduct a comprehensive audit of all financial records. This audit will delve into the party’s financial transactions, scrutinizing the flow of funds and identifying any irregularities or unauthorized activities. Based on the findings of the audit, the panel will recommend appropriate disciplinary actions, which could include further sanctions against the suspended officials or even legal proceedings. This demonstrates the party’s commitment to uncovering the truth and holding those responsible accountable for their actions.

To ensure the continued functioning of the party during the investigation and subsequent proceedings, the SDP has appointed Sadiq Abubakar, the Deputy National Chairman (North), as the Acting National Chairman. This appointment, made in accordance with the party’s constitution, aims to provide stability and leadership during this challenging period. Abubakar’s role will be crucial in navigating the party through the investigation and implementing any necessary reforms to prevent similar incidents in the future. His leadership will be tested as he works to restore trust and confidence within the party and among its supporters.

The SDP has officially notified INEC and other relevant agencies about the suspensions, which take immediate effect. This transparency in communication demonstrates the party’s commitment to upholding accountability and working within established legal and regulatory frameworks. By proactively informing relevant authorities, the SDP aims to ensure a coordinated and transparent process in addressing the allegations and implementing necessary corrective measures. The outcome of the investigation and the subsequent actions taken by the party will be crucial in determining the long-term impact of this crisis on the SDP’s image, internal stability, and future electoral prospects. The party’s handling of this situation will send a strong message about its commitment to ethical conduct and financial transparency.
