The Ankobra River basin in Ghana’s Western Region has become the focal point of an intensified campaign against illegal mining, locally known as “galamsey.” On September 17, 2025, a joint task force, spearheaded by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operation Secretariat (NAIMOS), launched a robust operation targeting illegal mining activities along the river and its banks. This multi-agency effort involved the Western Regional Security Council, the Western Naval Command, and the Nzema East Blue Water Guards, demonstrating a concerted approach to tackling the persistent environmental threat. The operation, spanning communities from Dwira Ashem to Akango in the Nzema East Municipality, saw security personnel dismantling illegal structures erected along the riverbanks, while naval teams focused on clearing the river itself of dredging platforms and floating machines, commonly used in galamsey operations. This coordinated action aims to disrupt the logistical network of illegal miners and curb the devastating pollution they inflict on the river, which serves as a critical lifeline for local communities.

This recent operation marks the third consecutive week of targeted raids along the Ankobra River, highlighting the sustained commitment of NAIMOS and regional security forces to combatting illegal mining. The ongoing campaign forms part of a broader strategy to rehabilitate the Ankobra River and protect the communities that depend on it for their livelihoods. The river serves as a primary source of drinking water, supports agricultural activities, and provides sustenance through fishing. By addressing the problem of galamsey head-on, the authorities aim to restore the ecological balance of the river system and safeguard the well-being of the local population. These efforts reflect a growing recognition of the interconnectedness between environmental preservation and community development.

The September 17th operation yielded a significant haul, with numerous pieces of equipment used in illegal mining either destroyed or confiscated. The inventory of seized and demolished items includes 20 makeshift structures that served as operational bases for illegal miners, 10 dredging platforms used to extract riverbed materials, and 20 chanfangs, locally constructed floating machines used to process mined material. Further emphasizing the scale of the operation, authorities also seized 15 pumping machines, essential for dewatering mining pits, as well as four motorbikes likely used for transport and logistics. Other confiscated items included three gas cylinders, two solar panels, a television set, and even a standing fan, revealing the extent to which illegal miners had established a presence in the area.

The substantial quantity of confiscated and destroyed equipment underscores the impact of the operation, which authorities have described as a “significant blow” to the illegal mining networks active along the Ankobra. The disruption to their logistical infrastructure and the loss of valuable equipment are expected to hinder their operations, at least in the short term. However, officials acknowledge that the fight against galamsey is far from over and requires sustained efforts to achieve long-term success. The complexity of the issue, often involving intricate social and economic factors, demands a comprehensive approach beyond mere enforcement.

The task force has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to continuing the pressure on illegal miners until galamsey is completely eradicated from the Ankobra River and its surrounding communities. This pledge underscores the long-term vision of the campaign, extending beyond immediate seizures and demolitions towards creating a sustainably galamsey-free environment. The authorities recognize that vigilance and continuous monitoring are crucial to prevent the resurgence of illegal mining activities. This resolve signals a shift towards a more proactive and enduring strategy, crucial for the long-term health of the river and the well-being of the communities that rely on it.

The ongoing campaign against illegal mining along the Ankobra River represents a critical step in addressing the environmental degradation and socio-economic challenges posed by galamsey. The multi-agency collaboration, sustained operations, and significant seizures demonstrate a renewed commitment to combating this pervasive issue. However, the fight against galamsey requires a comprehensive and long-term strategy that encompasses not only enforcement but also community engagement, alternative livelihood programs, and effective environmental rehabilitation. The success of this campaign will depend on sustained efforts, continuous monitoring, and the collaborative engagement of all stakeholders to ensure a future where the Ankobra River can thrive and continue to support the lives and livelihoods of the communities it sustains.
