Senator Sunday Katung, representing Kaduna South, has recounted the swift establishment of the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia, highlighting his strategic approach that transcended the divisive lines of religion, ethnicity, and political affiliation. Within a mere eighteen months during the 10th Assembly, Senator Katung successfully navigated the complex legislative landscape to secure the university’s establishment, a feat he attributes to his focus on shared humanity and strategic leveraging of his social capital. He emphasized that his driving force was a fundamental question: why should the people of Southern Kaduna be treated differently within the Nigerian commonwealth? This question, fueled by a sense of fairness and equality, propelled him to reach across divides and build bridges with individuals who could aid his cause.
The Senator’s strategy involved a deliberate disregard for the divisive forces that often hinder progress in the region. He consciously chose to approach the task as a human being first, setting aside the potentially polarizing factors of religion, ethnicity, and party politics. This approach allowed him to foster connections and build alliances based on shared goals and mutual respect, regardless of background. Katung stressed the importance of utilizing social capital not for personal gain, but for the empowerment of the community. He believes his ability to connect with influential figures across different spheres, coupled with his unwavering focus on the common good, were instrumental in securing the university’s establishment. He acknowledges the divine hand in the success, recognizing that the culmination of these efforts was ultimately guided by a higher power.
The establishment of the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia, with a campus in Manchok, stands as a testament to Senator Katung’s commitment to the development of his constituency. He expressed gratitude to all stakeholders involved in this significant achievement and reiterated his pledge to continue championing developmental projects for the benefit of the people he represents. Recognizing the importance of education as a catalyst for growth and progress, Senator Katung emphasized the need for the Kaduna State Government to prioritize the recruitment of science teachers in secondary schools. This focus on science education, he argued, is crucial for equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to compete in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
Beyond formal education, Senator Katung also highlighted his commitment to youth mentorship and skills development. He revealed his ongoing efforts to train young people from Southern Kaduna in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), aiming to reduce idleness and empower them with the skills to thrive in the digital age. Addressing the pressing issue of insecurity, particularly in Kauru, Kachia, and other areas within Kaduna State, Senator Katung expressed serious concern about the involvement of locals in banditry and kidnappings. He emphasized that security measures are being intensified to combat the rising insecurity and warned perpetrators to desist or face the full force of the law.
Senator Katung highlighted the approval for the establishment of two Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) in Kauru by the military, a move aimed at bolstering security presence and addressing the escalating insecurity in the region. He categorically stated that the ongoing unrest in Southern Kaduna is not a herder-farmer conflict, as some portray it, but purely criminal activity that must be tackled decisively. Recognizing the crucial role of the media in shaping public discourse, he urged journalists to maintain their commitment to factual and accurate reporting.
Furthermore, Senator Katung provided an update on the progress of his bill to convert the Sir Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa Memorial Hospital, Kafanchan, into a Federal Medical Centre. He explained that the bill is currently awaiting a public hearing in the Senate, while a similar bill in the House of Representatives has already passed the third reading. Once the Senate passes the bill, a committee will be formed to harmonize both versions before presenting it to the President for assent. He solicited the continued prayers of his constituents for a seamless legislative process, noting that the Presidency has already indicated its support in principle for the project. The Chairman of the Southern Kaduna Journalists’ Forum, Mr. Ango Bally, commended Senator Katung’s dedication and urged him to sustain his commendable efforts for the advancement of the region. The meeting served as a platform for the Senator to communicate his legislative activities and ongoing initiatives to the public, demonstrating his commitment to transparency and accountability.
