The Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) has designated Senegal as the host nation for the 2025 CAA Zone II U-18 and U-20 Athletics Championships, scheduled for March. This decision marks a significant step in the CAA’s efforts to broaden its geographical reach and foster unity within the West African region through the power of sport. Senegal emerged as the chosen host after competing against Nigeria, Guinea, and Burkina Faso. The CAA Zone II, encompassing a diverse array of West African nations, aims to provide each member country with a sense of belonging and shared purpose, utilizing sporting events as a platform for regional integration and collaboration. Previous Zone II competitions have been held in Benin Republic, Togo, and Ghana, all situated in the western part of the sub-region. The selection of Senegal, located on the eastern side, reflects the CAA’s commitment to equitable distribution of hosting opportunities and its desire to showcase the rich sporting heritage of different parts of West Africa.

Senegal’s selection was influenced by several key factors, including the country’s state-of-the-art sporting facilities and its vibrant sporting culture. The nation boasts a strong tradition of athletic excellence and a passionate population deeply engaged with sports. Senegal’s reputation for hospitality and its diverse cultural landscape further enhance its appeal as a host nation. The CAA recognizes the importance of creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for athletes, officials, and spectators alike, and Senegal’s attributes align perfectly with this objective. The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) in Senegal is expected to work closely with the CAA to ensure a seamless and memorable championship experience for all participants.

The CAA Zone II U-18 and U-20 Championships serve as a critical platform for nurturing the athletic talent of young athletes across West Africa. He highlighted the potential of athletics and the combined U-18 and U-20 Championships as powerful tools for engaging young people and creating opportunities for their growth and development. Okowa stressed the commitment of the governments involved to ensure the success of the event, addressing potential concerns regarding security, transportation, accommodation, and crowd management. He assured that all necessary measures will be taken to provide a safe and secure environment for all participants and to deliver a positive and enduring experience for visitors.

Okowa’s vision for the championships extends beyond the realm of athletic competition. He sees the event as a catalyst for regional development and cooperation, leveraging the unifying power of sport to bridge cultural divides and foster a sense of shared identity among West African nations. The championships represent an opportunity to showcase the region’s sporting prowess to a wider audience and to inspire future generations of athletes. By hosting the event in Senegal, the CAA aims to not only celebrate athletic achievement but also to promote the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and cross-cultural understanding.
