The NEPL/Seplat Energy Joint Venture has reaffirmed its dedication to advancing education by commissioning three state-of-the-art Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) laboratories in Benin City, Edo State. This initiative builds upon the JV’s prior establishment of three similar labs in other Benin City schools, demonstrating a sustained commitment to enriching educational opportunities within their host communities. The newly commissioned labs, located at Niger College, Army Day Secondary School, and Oba Akenzua Secondary School, are equipped with cutting-edge technology and resources designed to foster a dynamic and engaging learning environment. This investment underscores the JV’s belief in the transformative power of education and its potential to empower future generations.

The commissioning ceremony, held on Thursday, marked a significant milestone in the partnership between Seplat Energy and the Edo State government. Chioma Afe, Director of External Affairs and Social Performance at Seplat Energy, expressed gratitude to Governor Godwin Obaseki for fostering an environment conducive to such impactful interventions. She emphasized the importance of the STEAM approach, which encourages interdisciplinary learning and cultivates critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovative skills – essential attributes for success in the 21st century. By providing students with these tools, the STEAM labs aim to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.

Governor Obaseki, represented by the Edo State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Emmanuel Paddy Iyamu, lauded Seplat Energy and NEPL for their proactive investment in the future of Edo’s youth. This collaborative effort between the private sector and the government highlights the shared commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for the benefit of the community.

The commissioning of the STEAM labs was met with enthusiasm from various stakeholders. Paul Omenogor, Deputy Manager of Sustainability at NEPL, encouraged the students, school authorities, and the host community to maximize the use of the new facilities, emphasizing their potential to inspire further investment from the JV partners. Andrew Ijegbai, Edo State Commissioner for Mining, Oil and Gas, echoed this sentiment, praising the JV’s contribution to both the Governor’s vision and the educational advancement of the state’s citizens. Their commitment to ensuring the labs’ effective utilization and sustainability further underscores the collaborative spirit driving this initiative.

The fully equipped STEAM labs provide access to modern educational tools, including computer systems, internet connectivity, and subject-specific materials, creating an immersive learning environment designed to revolutionize the teaching of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. By integrating these disciplines, the labs promote a holistic approach to education, fostering creativity, innovation, and critical thinking among students. This comprehensive approach aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to excel in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

The STEAM lab initiative represents a significant stride in Seplat Energy’s ongoing commitment to nurturing the next generation of innovators, engineers, scientists, and creative thinkers. By investing in these state-of-the-art facilities, the JV partners are not only providing access to quality education but also laying the foundation for a brighter future for Edo State. This initiative serves as a testament to the transformative power of public-private partnerships and their potential to create lasting positive impact within communities.
