The Sissala Union, a non-partisan development advocacy group representing the Sissala Area of Ghana, has expressed profound gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for incorporating crucial road infrastructure projects within their region into the government’s ambitious “Big Push” infrastructure development agenda. This inclusion marks a significant milestone for the Sissala people, addressing a long-standing concern and signifying a renewed commitment to the region’s development. For over three decades, successive administrations had overlooked the pleas for improved road networks, making this announcement a cause for genuine celebration and renewed hope for the Sissala community.

The Union’s statement, released by President Mahamud Bakah Adunah, specifically acknowledges the instrumental role played by the recent visit of Roads and Highways Minister Governs Agboadza and his Deputy, Alhassan Suhuyini, to the Sissala area. This visit provided firsthand exposure to the dire state of the region’s roads, effectively conveying the urgency of the situation to the government and contributing to the subsequent inclusion of Sissala road projects in the “Big Push” initiative. The timing of the announcement, coinciding with the 2025 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review presented to Parliament by Finance Minister Cassel Ato Forson, underscores the government’s commitment to prioritizing these critical infrastructure improvements.

Beyond the immediate benefits of improved transportation, the Sissala Union emphasizes the strategic importance of the region to Ghana’s national development. Located on the international border with Burkina Faso, the Sissala area plays a crucial role in cross-border trade and regional security. The region is also a significant agricultural hub, recognized for its high-quality maize production, contributing significantly to Ghana’s food security. Furthermore, the area boasts substantial untapped mineral resources, including gold and iron ore, which hold the potential to drive economic growth and create employment opportunities. Improved road infrastructure will be essential for unlocking the full economic potential of these resources, facilitating their efficient transportation to markets and processing facilities.

The Sissala Union also commends the appointment and parliamentary approval of Mohammed Adams Sukparu, the Member of Parliament for Sissala West, as Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations. This appointment is seen as further evidence of the government’s commitment to the Sissala area and its people, recognizing the region’s potential for growth and development in the digital age. The Union anticipates that Mr. Sukparu will be a strong advocate for the region within the government, further strengthening the connection between the Sissala area and the national development agenda.

While expressing deep appreciation for President Mahama’s commitment, the Sissala Union emphasizes the importance of translating promises into tangible action. They urge the government to prioritize the selection of competent and qualified contractors to execute the road projects, ensuring that the work is carried out to the highest standards. Timely disbursement of funds is also crucial to avoid delays and ensure the smooth progress of construction. The Union further stresses the importance of rigorous project supervision and active community involvement throughout the construction process. This participatory approach will ensure that the projects are aligned with local needs and priorities, maximizing their long-term impact and promoting community ownership.

Finally, the Sissala Union calls upon the government to invest in the sustainable exploitation of the region’s rich natural resources, particularly its gold and iron ore deposits. They advocate for a responsible and environmentally sound approach to mining, ensuring that the benefits of resource extraction are shared equitably with the local communities. Simultaneously, the Union underscores the importance of continued investment in the agricultural sector, providing support to farmers and promoting modern farming practices. These combined efforts, focused on both resource extraction and agricultural development, will create a diversified and resilient economy, contributing to the long-term socio-economic growth of the Sissala area and Ghana as a whole. The Union believes this integrated development approach will uplift the Sissala people, ensuring their full participation in the nation’s progress and prosperity.
