On a recent Friday, Sokoto State Governor Dr. Ahmad Aliyu presented a comprehensive budget proposal of N526.88 billion for the fiscal year 2025 to the state House of Assembly. Dubbed the “Transformational and Infrastructural Budget,” the proposal is structured with a strong emphasis on long-term development initiatives. The budget allocates N176.3 billion for recurrent expenditure and a significantly higher N349.4 billion for capital projects, illustrating a commitment to enhancing the state’s infrastructure and promoting a robust economic foundation. The distribution of resources highlights a strategic plan to prioritize development efforts that would yield sustainable growth for the state.
One of the most notable aspects of this budget proposal is the education sector’s allocation, which receives the largest share, approximately 25% of the total budget. This prioritization signifies the government’s recognition of education as a critical foundation for societal advancement. Following education, notable allocations are made to health, agriculture, and public works, indicating a balanced approach towards key sectors that influence the daily lives of the citizens. In delineating the budgetary allocations, Governor Aliyu noted that 44% of the budget would address recurrent costs. These costs encompass the implementation of the new minimum wage, set at N70,000, for state workers, as well as pension payments and other government expenses. By assuring civil servants that the new wage would be effective from January 2025, the governor expressed appreciation for their ongoing support of his administration. This commitment underscores the administration’s intent to not only elevate the living standards of government workers but also to stimulate the local economy through increased spending power.
Governor Aliyu took the opportunity during the budget presentation to clarify that his administration has prudently refrained from borrowing funds from financial institutions for project financing. He stated, “To date, we are not owing any contractor in the state,” reinforcing a message of fiscal responsibility and sound management of state resources.
