The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has strongly denied social media rumors that a 16-year-old suspect in an East Legon traffic accident is not being detained at the Osu Correctional Centre as mandated by a court order. The incident, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals, has attracted significant public attention and concern. The Police affirmed that following the court’s directive on November 1, 2024, the teenager, who is the son of well-known preacher Salifu Amoako, was duly sent to the correctional facility and remains there. This assertion comes in response to widespread misinformation circulating online, which the authorities regard as a serious issue.

In their communication, the Police emphasized the importance of accountability regarding false news and its repercussions under Ghana’s legal framework. Specifically, they referenced Section 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), which makes the dissemination of misleading information an offense. By addressing these false claims, the Police aim to clarify the situation and assure the public of their commitment to upholding the law, particularly in the face of misinformation that can exacerbate public tension and distress.

As part of their investigative efforts, the GPS has identified individuals behind two social media accounts that feature the erroneous claims—the TikTok account “prisywanlov1” and the Facebook account “EmpressPapa A-Amigos.” By tracing these accounts, the Police hope to establish accountability for the spreading of false information and to take appropriate legal action against the perpetrators. This approach indicates the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the situation, aiming to deter others from engaging in similar activities.

The Police expressed particular concern over the insensitivity shown by some individuals who are leveraging this tragic accident for personal gain or attention. They noted that using a tragic event to garner publicity is not only unseemly but also disrespectful to the families affected by the loss of their loved ones. The authorities’ statement reflects a broader concern about how tragedies can be exploited in the digital age, emphasizing the need for community solidarity and respect during such difficult times.

In urging the public to refrain from sharing false information, the Police are advocating for an environment where transparency and truth prevail. They highlighted the negative impact of misinformation, particularly on grieving families, who deserve the time and space to mourn without the added stress of public speculation and rumor. This plea underscores the need for responsible social media usage and the potential consequences that arise when individuals prioritize sensationalism over empathy.

Overall, the Ghana Police Service’s response to the incident and the ensuing misinformation demonstrates a commitment to integrity and the rule of law. By publicly rebutting false claims and pursuing those responsible for their spread, the authorities not only seek to set the record straight but also to foster a culture of accountability and respect in the face of tragedies, ensuring that the victims’ families can find solace amidst their pain. As the investigation continues, the Police remain focused on both the legal implications of the accident and the broader societal issues related to misinformation in the digital age.
