The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ondo State chapter, has issued an urgent call to the state government to address the dire condition of sporting facilities, emphasizing the detrimental impact on athletes and teams. The association’s chairman, Segun Giwa, highlighted the pressing need for government intervention, particularly concerning the ongoing delays in upgrading the Akure Sports Complex. He stressed the negative consequences of neglecting other sports like basketball, volleyball, hockey, and handball, which have suffered from a lack of funding and attention. This neglect has not only hampered the development of these sports but also deprived athletes of the necessary resources to excel.
Giwa further elaborated on the plight of Sunshine Stars, the state-owned football team, forced to play all their Nigeria Premier Football League matches away from their home ground in Akure Stadium. This displacement has placed the team in a precarious position, increasing their risk of relegation. He recounted the team’s arduous travel schedule in December, highlighting the strain of playing in Ikenne, Ogun State, returning to Akure briefly, and then embarking on another long journey to Aba for a rescheduled match against Enyimba International. The team then returned to Akure before yet another trip to Minna to face Niger Tornadoes. Such a demanding travel schedule not only takes a physical toll on the players but also disrupts their training and preparation, putting them at a disadvantage compared to their competitors.
The chairman also pointed to the upcoming National Sports Festival, underscoring the state’s lack of preparedness. He emphasized the absence of an artificial track, a suitable indoor sports hall, and a functional swimming pool—essential facilities for athletes’ training and competition. This lack of adequate training facilities puts Ondo State athletes at a significant disadvantage and undermines their ability to perform at their best in the national competition. SWAN appealed to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to declare a state of emergency on government sporting facilities to facilitate a swift turnaround.
The deplorable state of sporting facilities in Ondo State reflects a broader pattern of neglect across the country, where inadequate funding, poor maintenance, and a lack of prioritization have hampered the development of sports. This neglect has far-reaching consequences, not only for athletes but also for the overall health and well-being of the population. Sports play a crucial role in promoting physical fitness, fostering teamwork, and instilling discipline, and the absence of proper facilities deprives communities of these benefits. Moreover, the lack of investment in sports undermines the potential of Nigerian athletes to compete on the global stage and represent the country with pride.
The call by SWAN for government intervention is a timely reminder of the urgent need to address the challenges facing sports development in Nigeria. The government must recognize the importance of investing in sports infrastructure and providing adequate support to athletes. This includes renovating existing facilities, constructing new ones where needed, and ensuring proper maintenance to prevent further deterioration. Furthermore, the government should prioritize funding for sports programs and initiatives, providing athletes with the necessary resources to train and compete effectively. This also entails supporting the development of sports at the grassroots level, nurturing young talent, and creating pathways for athletes to progress to higher levels of competition.
The development of sports in Nigeria requires a collaborative effort involving the government, private sector, and sports organizations. By working together, these stakeholders can create a conducive environment for athletes to thrive and for sports to flourish. This requires a long-term vision, sustained investment, and a commitment to excellence. The success of Nigerian athletes on the global stage is not only a source of national pride but also an inspiration to future generations. By investing in sports, Nigeria can unlock the potential of its athletes and contribute to the overall development of the country. The government must heed the call by SWAN and take decisive action to address the urgent need for improved sporting facilities in Ondo State and across the country.
