Tamale Technical University (TaTU) recently held an induction ceremony for its new Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bashiru Ibn Imoro Saeed, marking a pivotal moment in the university’s leadership transition. This event is significant not only for the formalization of his role but also for its promise of a new chapter for the institution, building upon past accomplishments. Prof. Bashiru takes over from Prof. Abass Braimah, who served as the first VC from September 2020 until July 2024, during which time the university made impressive strides in both academic offerings and infrastructure development. The official handover occurred in July 2024, but the ceremony emphasized the importance of the leadership change and its implications for TaTU’s future.

The induction ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including family members of the new Vice Chancellor, representatives from educational regulatory bodies, and local traditional leaders, among others. The proceedings were led by Dr. Al-Hassan Emil Abdulai, Chair of the University Council, who extended his congratulations to Prof. Bashiru and encouraged him to focus on enriching academic programs, enhancing infrastructure, and upholding high educational standards. With an increasing student population, it is vital for the university to adapt and grow, making Dr. Abdulai’s call for improvement particularly timely.

In his acceptance speech, Prof. Bashiru conveyed heartfelt gratitude to the university’s community for placing their trust in him. He acknowledged the efforts of his predecessor, Prof. Abass Braimah, whose leadership established a robust foundation for TaTU. Prof. Bashiru expressed his intention to collaborate tirelessly with faculty, staff, and students to advance TaTU’s core values and legacy while setting the stage for further development and innovation within the institution.

Prof. Bashiru shared a bold vision of transforming TaTU into a preeminent institution in technical education, both nationally and on the global stage. He outlined strategies aimed at modernizing the university’s infrastructure, which would include upgrades to lecture halls, laboratories, and various learning spaces to foster creativity and collaboration among students. A key part of his vision is to develop a “smart campus,” integrating technology across academic and administrative functions to optimize overall operational efficiency and enhance the learning experience.

Sustainability emerged as a prominent theme during Prof. Bashiru’s address. He plans to implement eco-friendly initiatives on campus and create a greener environment that reflects a commitment to sustainability. Additionally, he voiced an intention to improve student accommodations, ensuring safe and comfortable living conditions. Recognizing the importance of holistic student development, Prof. Bashiru also pledged to enhance recreational facilities that contribute to students’ physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

In concluding his address, Prof. Bashiru stressed the importance of inclusivity and teamwork, calling upon all stakeholders—students, faculty, staff, and the broader community—to unite towards the common goal of maintaining TaTU as a leading institution for technical education, applied research, and lifelong learning. His vision encompasses a collaborative effort that aims not only to preserve the university’s legacy but to elevate its status over the coming generations. The event concluded on a hopeful note, signaling the start of a transformative period for Tamale Technical University under Prof. Bashiru’s leadership.
