President Bola Tinubu held a meeting on Thursday with the Edo State governor-elect, Monday Okpebholo, emphasizing the need for the new administration to prioritize the developmental needs of the state. Assuring full support from the Federal Government and the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Tinubu articulated the importance of good governance and delivering tangible results. He stressed that Okpebholo now embarks on a significant journey of development and urged him to collaborate with experienced members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to effectively navigate the political landscape. Tinubu’s message highlighted the essential role of progress in governance, especially in emerging democracies like Nigeria.

Acknowledging the inherent challenges that come with democratic governance, especially in nations still developing their political institutions, Tinubu shared insights from global democratic experiences, asserting that despite difficulties, democracy remains the most effective form of government. He congratulated Okpebholo and his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, for their electoral victory, emphasizing their transition from rivals to partners—a narrative he deemed as a symbol of effective political collaboration. The President’s recount of his own political journey underscored the importance of resilience, learning from setbacks, and the eventual rewards of perseverance in governance.

Further, President Tinubu recognized the contributions of past leadership in Edo State, particularly highlighting the role of former governor Adams Oshiomhole and the APC’s collective efforts leading up to the gubernatorial election. Notably, he praised the collaborative effort of the progressive governors who contributed to the electoral process and the party’s overall success. Acknowledging the conduct of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, he expressed gratitude for their efforts in ensuring a peaceful election devoid of violence or unrest, thereby facilitating a smooth democratic transition.

As discussions progressed, President Tinubu urged unity within the party regardless of external criticisms. He encouraged party members to remain steadfast in achieving the Renewed Hope Agenda, an initiative aimed at advancing the party’s principles and objectives. Tinubu also elaborated on the importance of local political stability, citing successful elections across various senatorial districts as evidence of the APC’s solid support base in the state. His analysis suggested a favorable outlook for the party’s continued dominance in Edo politics, reinforcing the message that dedicated grassroots efforts yield significant political dividends.

In his remarks, Tinubu highlighted the dedication of the electorate during the recent election. He noted the significant turnout of voters braving heavy rainfall on election day, viewing this commitment as a testament to their belief in the APC’s vision. This demonstration of resilience aligned with the National Chairman of the APC, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje’s comments on the enthusiasm of voters, who showed unwavering support for the party, even in adverse conditions. This enthusiasm, they argued, underlined the party’s appeal and connection with the electorate, solidifying its position in the state.

Looking ahead, Ganduje outlined the APC’s ambitions for future electoral victories, particularly in Ondo and Anambra states. He articulated the party’s strategic vision for “Political de-marginalization of the Southeast geopolitical zone,” asserting the need for the APC to secure more states in the region. This focus underscores the party’s goal of expanding its influence and representation, aiming to enhance its foothold throughout Nigeria. The discussions illustrated a commitment to not only sustaining victories but also fostering a stronger representation in politically significant regions, ensuring the party’s relevance on the national stage.
