Tragedy Strikes as Reckless Driver Claims Life of Oyo Traffic Officer
The Oyo State Government has vowed to bring to justice the driver responsible for the death of Kehinde Fabunmi, a dedicated officer of the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA). This tragic incident occurred on Saturday at Agbowo, Ibadan North Local Government Area, when the driver of a black Mercedes-Benz, bearing license plate LSD 862 JS, allegedly disregarded a traffic light. Upon being apprehended by OYRTMA officers, including Fabunmi, the driver reportedly reversed his vehicle and, in a desperate attempt to escape, struck Fabunmi, inflicting fatal injuries.
The untimely demise of Officer Fabunmi, a Level 4 officer committed to ensuring road safety in Oyo State, has sent shockwaves through the community and the OYRTMA. Chairman Adekoya Adesagba expressed profound grief over the loss, emphasizing that Fabunmi was diligently performing his lawful duties, striving to maintain a safe environment for motorists and pedestrians at the time of the incident. He condemned the driver’s reckless actions and reiterated the government’s commitment to prosecuting the suspect to the fullest extent of the law.
Adesagba lauded the prompt response of both police and OYRTMA officers, who swiftly apprehended the fleeing driver near the University of Ibadan. He offered condolences to Fabunmi’s grieving family, assuring them that justice would be served. The chairman stressed that any act of disrespect or assault against traffic officers will not be tolerated, and perpetrators will face severe consequences. This incident underscores the daily dangers faced by traffic management personnel and the crucial need for all drivers to adhere to traffic regulations and show respect for the authority of those entrusted with maintaining order on the roads.
Providing a detailed account of the incident, Adesagba explained that Fabunmi approached the apprehended vehicle from the front. As the driver reversed and attempted to speed away, Fabunmi was struck, sustaining severe head injuries. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Orogun for initial treatment, and subsequently transferred to another hospital within Ibadan metropolis, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries. The suspect was promptly arraigned before the Iyaganku Magistrate Court on Monday. However, due to the court’s weekday break, the case was adjourned until Thursday, with the suspect remanded in police custody.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks faced by traffic officers who dedicate themselves to ensuring the safety of our roads. Their vulnerability to reckless drivers highlights the urgent need for both stricter enforcement of traffic laws and increased public awareness campaigns that promote respect for traffic officers and emphasize the importance of responsible driving. The Oyo State Government’s commitment to prosecuting the suspect sends a clear message that such disregard for human life will not go unpunished. It is a step towards holding accountable those who endanger the lives of those working to protect the public.
The loss of Officer Kehinde Fabunmi is a tragic blow to his family, the OYRTMA, and the community he served. His dedication to duty will be remembered, and his untimely death serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of reckless driving. The pursuit of justice in this case is paramount, both for Fabunmi’s family and for the safety of all traffic officers who bravely perform their duties in the face of danger. It is hoped that this tragedy will prompt a renewed focus on road safety and a greater appreciation for the vital role played by those who work tirelessly to keep our roads safe.
