The Kadjebi Police Station in Ghana’s Oti Region experienced a security breach on Saturday afternoon when two suspects managed to escape from custody. This incident has sparked a manhunt and raised concerns about the safety and security of police facilities. The escape occurred when the suspects, taking advantage of the presence of only a single police officer on duty, forcibly broke out of their cell. In the process of their escape, the suspects assaulted the lone officer, inflicting injuries that required hospitalization.
The escape immediately triggered a swift response from the Kadjebi Police Command. Superintendent Frank Nana Asomaning, the District Police Commander, confirmed the incident and assured the public that strenuous efforts were underway to recapture the fugitives. He revealed that the suspects, in their desperate bid for freedom, had mercilessly attacked the female police officer on duty, identified as L/Cpl. Gyapong. The officer was subsequently rushed to St. Mary Theresa Catholic Hospital in Dodi-Papase for medical treatment, where she is reportedly responding positively.
The police, determined to swiftly apprehend the escapees, immediately launched a comprehensive search operation. Their efforts yielded positive results on Sunday, September 21st, with the successful re-arrest of one of the fugitives. This individual is currently back in police custody, awaiting further processing within the legal system. However, the second escapee remains at large.
To expedite the recapture of the remaining fugitive, the Kadjebi Police Command has announced a bounty of GHC2,000 for any information leading to his arrest. This financial incentive underscores the seriousness with which the police are treating this matter and their determination to bring the escapee to justice. They are appealing to the public to cooperate and provide any relevant information that might aid in his swift apprehension.
In addition to the ongoing manhunt, the Kadjebi Police Command has initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape. This investigation aims to ascertain the precise sequence of events, identify any security lapses that may have facilitated the escape, and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. It will also examine the specifics of the assault on L/Cpl. Gyapong, ensuring that the suspects face appropriate charges for their actions.
This incident serves as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with law enforcement and the importance of maintaining robust security protocols in police facilities. While the re-arrest of one suspect is a positive development, the continued search for the second escapee underscores the need for continued vigilance and public cooperation. The Kadjebi Police Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of the community and will continue to pursue all available avenues to bring the remaining fugitive to justice.
