The Ghana Police Service successfully thwarted a meticulously planned armed robbery attempt in Accra on Monday, July 15, 2025, preventing what could have been a serious crime against a foreign national. The operation, led by the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) Headquarters, was initiated based on credible intelligence received regarding five armed individuals lodging at a Labadi hotel and plotting to rob a foreign national residing in the Cantonments area. This swift response underscores the Police Service’s proactive approach to crime prevention and its commitment to safeguarding both residents and visitors within the country.
Acting upon the received intelligence, a dedicated surveillance team from the PID meticulously tracked the movements of the suspects who were traveling in a Toyota Yaris vehicle towards their intended target in Cantonments. As the suspects became aware of the police presence, they initiated a violent confrontation by opening fire on the officers. This resulted in injuries to one police officer who sustained gunshot wounds to the legs and underarm. Despite being under fire, the police officers responded decisively, returning fire and injuring two of the armed suspects.
In the immediate aftermath of the exchange of gunfire, both injured suspects were transported swiftly to the Police Hospital for medical attention. However, despite efforts to save their lives, both suspects were later pronounced dead. The injured police officer is currently receiving treatment at the hospital and is reported to be in stable condition and responding positively to medical care. This incident highlights the inherent dangers faced by law enforcement officers in their line of duty and underscores their bravery in confronting armed criminals to protect the community.
Following the confrontation, a comprehensive search of the suspects’ vehicle and the surrounding area was conducted. This search yielded significant evidence related to the planned robbery, including two pump-action guns loaded with ammunition, a supply of live cartridges, three mobile phones believed to be used for communication and coordination, talismans possibly intended for superstitious protection, and other unspecified items that are currently undergoing further investigation. The recovery of these items provides crucial evidence for the ongoing investigation and offers insights into the suspects’ planned operation.
While two of the suspects were neutralized during the confrontation, three others managed to escape the scene and are currently at large. The Ghana Police Service has launched a large-scale manhunt, deploying resources and personnel to locate and apprehend the remaining suspects. They are believed to be hiding within Accra and its surrounding areas. This manhunt reflects the Police Service’s determination to bring all perpetrators to justice and ensure the safety and security of the community.
The Ghana Police Service has reassured the public of its unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and security within the country. They have appealed to the public for cooperation and urged anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the fleeing suspects to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation. This public appeal highlights the importance of community involvement in crime-solving and emphasizes the collaborative effort required to ensure a safe and secure environment for all. The Police Service remains vigilant in its efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects and bring closure to this case, sending a clear message that criminal activity will not be tolerated.
