The political landscape in Ghana’s Amenfi East constituency is embroiled in controversy following accusations of clandestine appointments made without the knowledge or consent of key party officials. Nana Kofi Atokyi, the Constituency Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), has publicly denounced these appointments, characterizing them as unjust, unauthorized, and disrespectful to the established party hierarchy. His strongly worded statement, addressed to high-ranking party officials and the media, details a growing rift within the constituency, fueled by allegations of unilateral decision-making by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Raymond Nana Ebbah.
At the heart of the dispute lie two specific appointments: the selection of an individual identified as McLean to the Regional Lands Commission Board and the appointment of Mr. Alidu Dramani as the Municipal Director for the Youth Employment Agency (YEA). Mr. Atokyi contends that both appointments were made without any consultation with the core nine constituency executives, a group that includes himself, the Secretary, Women’s Organizer, Youth Organizer, Treasurer, Organizer, Communications Officer, and the Zongo Caucus Coordinator. This disregard for established protocol, he argues, represents a significant breach of trust and undermines the authority of the party’s leadership within the constituency.
In the case of McLean’s appointment to the Lands Commission Board, Mr. Atokyi claims that the MCE, when confronted, admitted to making the nomination, asserting it was his personal prerogative. This justification was reportedly challenged by the Regional Minister, who emphasized the importance of consultation with party leadership, including constituency executives and the Member of Parliament, for such appointments. This disagreement highlights a clear discrepancy in understanding regarding the authority to make such decisions and underscores the lack of communication between the MCE and other key party stakeholders.
The appointment of Mr. Dramani to the YEA directorship has further exacerbated tensions within the constituency. Mr. Atokyi reveals that regional party authorities had explicitly instructed against filling the position until broader consultations were completed. Despite this directive, Mr. Dramani allegedly assumed the role, reportedly on the instructions of the MCE, further defying the established authority and creating a climate of defiance. Adding to the complexity of the situation, attempts to alert the Regional Minister and Regional Chairman to this breach resulted in instructions to suspend the appointment pending further review. However, Mr. Dramani reportedly ignored these instructions, highlighting a breakdown in discipline and communication within the party structure.
The fallout from these controversial appointments has been significant, particularly among the constituency’s youth, who have voiced their outrage and threatened to stage demonstrations in protest. Mr. Atokyi alleges that the MCE’s associates have resorted to online harassment and intimidation of constituency executives, particularly through a social media platform known as the “Asikuma platform.” He cites a specific instance where the MCE allegedly insulted the party’s Women’s Organizer, further escalating the already strained relationship between the MCE and the party executives. This incident, combined with the unauthorized appointments, paints a picture of escalating internal conflict and a disregard for respectful dialogue within the NDC in Amenfi East.
The situation has become increasingly volatile, with the potential for further escalation. Mr. Atokyi’s public statement, while intended to bring transparency and accountability to the situation, also carries the risk of exacerbating existing tensions. He acknowledges the potential repercussions, stating, “I know with the kind of threats coming to me, this press release may worsen the situation, but I am doing this for the good of the party.” This statement underscores the gravity of the situation and the chairman’s commitment to upholding party principles, even at personal risk. He has called for urgent intervention from the highest levels of the NDC, including the President, to restore order and adherence to party protocols within the Amenfi East constituency.
The crisis in Amenfi East exposes deeper issues within the NDC’s internal workings. The alleged disregard for established procedures, the breakdown in communication, and the escalating tensions between party officials raise concerns about the party’s ability to maintain unity and effectively govern. The situation calls for swift and decisive action from the party’s national leadership to address the root causes of the conflict, restore trust among party members, and ensure that future appointments are made in a transparent and inclusive manner. Failure to address these issues could have significant implications for the party’s standing in the constituency and potentially impact its broader political prospects. The call for presidential intervention highlights the urgency of the situation and the need for a strong and decisive response to prevent further escalation and ensure the integrity of the party’s operations in Amenfi East.
