Liberia’s agricultural sector, a cornerstone of the nation’s economy and the livelihood of a significant portion of its population, received a substantial boost with the donation of 16 brand-new Yamaha motorbikes and 32 helmets from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This contribution, valued at USD 56,000, represents a tangible investment in enhancing the logistical capacity of the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) extension staff, enabling them to reach and support farmers and agricultural cooperatives more effectively, especially in remote communities targeted by the Accelerated Community Development Programme (ACDP). This donation is not an isolated event but rather a component of a broader, comprehensive initiative aimed at revitalizing Liberia’s rural landscape and empowering its communities.
The ACDP, a collaborative effort between the Liberian Government and UNDP launched in 2022, stands as a testament to the commitment of both entities towards sustainable and inclusive development. This program addresses critical development gaps in rural areas, focusing on key sectors such as agriculture, health, education, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), energy, and infrastructure. The overriding aim is to bridge the disparity between urban and rural areas, reduce poverty, and foster self-reliance within communities. The motorbike donation specifically targets the agricultural sector, recognizing its pivotal role in uplifting rural livelihoods and driving economic growth. By providing MOA extension workers with improved mobility, the program seeks to enhance the delivery of essential agricultural services, knowledge dissemination, and technical support to farmers and cooperatives, thereby increasing productivity and fostering a transition towards commercial agriculture.
Since its inception, the ACDP has recorded significant strides in various sectors, demonstrating its tangible impact on Liberia’s development trajectory. In agriculture, the program has facilitated the transformation of 12 farmers-based organizations into formally registered agricultural cooperatives, empowering them with improved organizational structures and access to resources. The distribution of 14 tractors with trailers, coupled with the training of 28 operators, has significantly enhanced the mechanization of farming practices, increasing efficiency and output. Furthermore, the provision of essential farming equipment, including rice mills, cassava mills, sugarcane mills, threshers, and combined harvesters, valued at over USD 700,000, has strengthened agricultural activities, promoting value addition and income generation.
Beyond agriculture, the ACDP has also made significant contributions to the health and water sectors. Access to clean and safe drinking water has been significantly improved through the completion of three solar-powered water infrastructure projects in Gbarpolu and Bong Counties, representing an investment of USD 388,641.23. These projects have brought much-needed relief to rural communities, reducing the burden of waterborne diseases and improving overall health outcomes. In the health sector, the donation of seven customized ambulances worth USD 354,385.64 to underserved communities across multiple counties has enhanced access to emergency medical services, thereby saving lives and improving healthcare delivery.
Looking towards the future, UNDP has announced plans to further bolster Liberia’s agricultural sector through the construction of three agricultural processing and storage facilities in Gbarpolu, Bong, and Rivercess Counties. With the first facility slated for construction in Bopolu City in January 2025, these facilities are strategically designed to address the critical issue of post-harvest losses, a major challenge faced by farmers. By providing appropriate storage and processing infrastructure, the program aims to improve market access for farmers, increase their incomes, and ensure food security. This forward-looking approach reflects UNDP’s commitment to long-term sustainable development and empowering communities to take control of their economic destinies.
