Manchester United’s pursuit of a new striker appears to be pivoting away from Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, as the club’s new manager, Ruben Amorim, is reportedly favoring Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface. United have struggled offensively this season, scoring only 17 goals in 12 league matches, prompting the need for a strategic re-evaluation of their transfer targets. The club initially showed interest in Osimhen, but with Amorim’s appointment, Manchester United has turned its focus towards players who align more closely with the Portuguese manager’s tactical philosophies.

Osimhen, who is currently on loan at Galatasaray, has demonstrated his prowess on the pitch with an impressive record of nine goals and five assists in just 12 appearances this season. Despite his strong form, Galatasaray is not expected to activate Osimhen’s €75 million release clause available in January, according to reports from Il Mattino. Meanwhile, the Nigerian striker’s future at Napoli remains murky, with the Italian champions prepared to wait until the summer to clarify his situation. Especifically, Osimhen’s high wages have deterred several potential Premier League suitors from making a move for him.

Conversely, Victor Boniface has established himself as a standout player for Bayer Leverkusen since joining in 2023. His remarkable record—29 goals and 10 assists in 49 appearances—was instrumental in helping Leverkusen secure their first Bundesliga title as well as the DFB-Pokal last season. Boniface has impressed many with his contributions, earning accolades like the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award. Although Boniface is currently sidelined due to a thigh injury sustained during international duty, he remains an attractive option for Manchester United as they consider their attacking options.

Negotiations are underway between Leverkusen and Boniface for a contract extension that aims to keep the forward at the club until 2029. Such a deal would see the 23-year-old increase his salary to one of the highest at Leverkusen, moving from his current annual wage of €3 million. The club’s willingness to tie down their star player highlights their commitment to maintaining a strong squad amidst growing interest from other European clubs.

In addition to Boniface, United’s leadership is eyeing other potential striker targets, including Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres, who previously thrived under Amorim’s management. Gyökeres has also been prolific in Portugal, amassing 67 goals and providing 19 assists in 70 appearances. As Manchester United evaluates its options, the club remains aware that securing either Boniface or Gyökeres will require substantial financial outlay, with both players valued at approximately €70-75 million.

However, Manchester United’s recent summer spending has placed constraints on their financial flexibility, which could result in a delay in their pursuit of a new striker until the end of the current season. The club will need to carefully evaluate their financial situation against their on-field performance as they seek to bolster their attacking lineup and improve their goal-scoring record. The ongoing interest in Boniface and Gyökeres serves as a testament to United’s ambition to return to the top echelon of European football through strategic and informed recruiting.
