On Monday, President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to the independence and integrity of Nigeria’s judiciary during the swearing-in ceremony of Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). The event took place at the Council Chamber of the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja, following the Senate’s confirmation of Kekere-Ekun the previous week. With her appointment, Justice Kekere-Ekun becomes the second female Chief Justice in Nigeria’s history, a notable achievement signaling progress in a traditionally male-dominated field.

In his address, President Tinubu underscored the judiciary’s fundamental role in preserving Nigeria’s constitutional democracy. He referred to the judiciary as a critical pillar in the country’s governance structure, necessary for maintaining balance and accountability among the branches of government. Tinubu emphasized that throughout Nigeria’s history, the judiciary has acted as a moderating force, ensuring justice and protecting the rights of citizens. He articulated the judiciary’s unique position as the “last hope of the common man,” reinforcing the public’s confidence in democracy by offering recourse for grievances.

The President stressed the necessity for the judiciary to maintain its independence from the executive and legislative branches of government. He assured that his administration is committed to preserving the sanctity of the judiciary, highlighting a clear demarcation between the roles of these government arms. Tinubu pledged that his government will not interfere with judicial functions or compromise the relationship between the various branches, as this independence is vital for the sustenance of democracy in Nigeria.

Moreover, Tinubu addressed the improvements in the welfare and working conditions of judicial officers as part of his administration’s initiative to enhance the effectiveness of the justice system. He urged Justice Kekere-Ekun to embody the qualities of ethical leadership, courage, and honesty that have characterized her career thus far. The President expressed his confidence that her leadership will inspire her colleagues and strengthen the judiciary during this significant period in its evolution.

The President also took the opportunity to celebrate Justice Kekere-Ekun’s ascent within the judiciary as an inspiring narrative for women, particularly young girls, in Nigeria. He framed her achievement not just as a personal triumph but as a message that women can aspire to and attain high positions in their fields. Tinubu dedicated a special mention of gratitude to Justice Kekere-Ekun’s mother, Mama Wilfred Ogundimu, and her family, acknowledging their support throughout her journey.

The ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, reflecting the significance of the occasion, and included former chief justices and prominent figures from the judiciary and legislative branches. Tinubu expressed appreciation to the Senate for the swift confirmation process, and he recognized the ongoing contribution of the judiciary in upholding democracy in Nigeria. Ultimately, his remarks reinforced a commitment to progress within the judicial system and emphasized the importance of strong leadership that embodies integrity and promotes equity.
