The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the provisional results for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Private Candidates, Second Series. This announcement, made by John Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, signifies the culmination of the examination process for the thousands of private candidates who undertook the exams. The release provides a comprehensive overview of the examination statistics, including candidate participation, performance across core subjects, and instances of malpractice detected during the examination and marking processes. The results are now accessible online, enabling candidates to view their performance and paving the way for their future academic and professional pursuits.
A total of 38,316 candidates registered for the examination, encompassing 17,596 males and 21,131 females. While the vast majority of registered candidates participated, 1,354 individuals were absent, representing a small percentage of the overall cohort. The participation figures reflect the continued demand for private WASSCE opportunities, allowing individuals who did not complete their secondary education through the conventional route to obtain a recognized qualification. The significant number of female candidates highlights the growing emphasis on education and career advancement among women in the region.
The performance of candidates across the four core subjects – English Language, Mathematics (Core), Integrated Science, and Social Studies – offers insight into the academic strengths and areas needing improvement within the private candidate cohort. In English Language, a pass rate of 54.79% achieved grades A1-C6, considered a satisfactory performance. However, a significant portion of candidates obtained lower grades, with 13.49% receiving D7, 12.90% receiving E8, and 13.45% receiving F9. This distribution indicates the need for enhanced English language proficiency among some candidates.
Mathematics (Core) presented a more challenging landscape, with a lower pass rate of 37.44% achieving grades A1-C6. A substantial 37.42% of candidates received an F9, underscoring the need for targeted interventions to improve mathematical skills. Integrated Science saw 53.31% of candidates obtaining A1-C6 grades, indicating a moderate performance level. Social Studies demonstrated the highest success rate, with 87.88% of candidates achieving A1-C6 grades. This strong performance reflects a solid grasp of social concepts and principles.
Despite the overall progress and commendable performance in certain subjects, WAEC identified instances of malpractice during the examination and the subsequent marking process. As a result, the subject results of 303 candidates have been withheld pending further investigation, while the entire results of 108 candidates have been withheld entirely. This decisive action underscores WAEC’s commitment to upholding the integrity and credibility of its examinations. The investigation process will thoroughly examine the alleged malpractice cases, ensuring fairness and accountability.
Candidates can conveniently access their results online through the WAEC website: www.waecgh.org. This online platform provides a secure and efficient method for result retrieval, eliminating the need for physical visits to WAEC offices. The website also offers valuable information regarding result verification and other related services. WAEC strongly cautions the public against falling prey to scammers who promise to upgrade results for a fee. The Council emphasizes the security of its results database and assures candidates that any attempts to alter results are futile. Institutions and organizations are encouraged to verify results directly with WAEC or utilize the online verification service for authentication. This safeguards against fraudulent claims and ensures the authenticity of presented results. WAEC extends its gratitude to all stakeholders who contributed to the successful conduct of the examination and the timely release of results. Their collaborative efforts ensured a smooth and efficient process, benefiting thousands of candidates seeking to further their education and career prospects.
