World of Life International (WLI), a faith-based organization, orchestrated a free medical outreach program for over thirty elderly residents of the Pipeline Community in Paynesville, Liberia, as part of the 178th Flag Day celebrations. The initiative, held at the WLI Ministry on August 25, 2025, aimed to champion sustainable and healthy aging within the community by providing essential medical services and health education. The comprehensive program encompassed free medical check-ups, treatment for common ailments, and educational sessions focusing on personal hygiene and environmental cleanliness. The core objective was to improve the well-being and quality of life of the elderly population, a demographic often overlooked in broader healthcare initiatives.

The medical check-ups covered a range of prevalent illnesses, such as malaria, colds, diarrhea, typhoid, body pain, and various infectious diseases. The WLI medical team diligently assessed each individual, providing on-site treatment where possible. Cases requiring more specialized attention were referred to appropriate health centers, ensuring continuity of care and access to comprehensive medical services. In addition to immediate treatment, the medical team also provided medications for symptom management and disease suppression, further supporting the elderly in managing their health conditions.

Beyond immediate medical needs, the initiative also emphasized preventative healthcare. The elderly received crucial education on maintaining personal hygiene and ensuring environmental cleanliness, empowering them to take proactive steps to prevent illness and maintain their well-being. This holistic approach recognizes that long-term health relies not only on treatment but also on preventative measures that address underlying risk factors. By empowering the elderly with knowledge and resources for maintaining hygiene and sanitation, the program aimed to contribute to a sustained improvement in their overall health.

Ms. Rebecca KG. Nyamndo, WLI Ageing Support Coordinator, articulated the driving force behind the initiative, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to supporting government efforts in addressing the unique health concerns of older adults. She highlighted the absence of a comprehensive national program specifically targeting elderly health needs, emphasizing the importance of WLI’s intervention in filling this gap. This initiative, she explained, reflects the vision of the Executive Director and Funder to proactively contribute to the well-being of the elderly population and bolster national healthcare efforts.

Madam Yassah Sumo, a representative from the Ministry of Health (MOH), delivered a compelling keynote address, underscoring the critical need for regular medical check-ups among the elderly. She drew a parallel between the vulnerability of young children and the declining health of older adults, emphasizing that as people age, their bodies become increasingly susceptible to illness. Regular check-ups, she argued, are paramount for early detection and intervention, preventing illnesses from escalating into more severe and costly health crises. Furthermore, she stressed that timely medical attention not only improves health outcomes but also reduces financial burdens associated with prolonged illnesses and complex treatments.

The elderly beneficiaries expressed profound gratitude for the WLI’s continuous support and the positive impact it has had on their lives. Mr. Aloysius Tokpa, speaking on behalf of the recipients, highlighted the significant role of the program’s teachings and treatments in sustaining their health and well-being. He acknowledged the financial constraints that often hinder regular medical check-ups for many elderly individuals but reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the learned hygiene and sanitation practices. Their heartfelt appreciation underscored the tangible benefits of the program and its positive contribution to the health and lives of the elderly community members.
