Intra-Party Dispute Rocks Abia State APC: Ward Suspends State Secretary and Member

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State has been embroiled in an internal conflict, culminating in the suspension of the state secretary, Mr. Chidi Avadja, and another member, Mr. Onyekwere Sylvester, by the Ahiaukwu Ward 2 chapter of the party in Umuahia South Local Government Area. The suspensions, announced in a statement released on Monday, stem from alleged violations of the party’s constitution and unauthorized actions taken by the suspended officials. This incident highlights the ongoing power struggles and factionalism that often plague political parties, particularly in the lead-up to elections. The ward-level disciplinary action against such a high-ranking official as the state secretary underscores the seriousness of the allegations and the potential for further escalation within the party’s ranks.

The decision to suspend the two members was reached during a ward meeting held on Saturday at the Okaiuga Civic Hall in Okwu Olokoro. The statement, signed by the Acting Ward Chairman, Mr. Nwabueze Ndumele, and Secretary, Mr. Ifeanyichukwu John, detailed the specific allegations against Mr. Avadja and Mr. Sylvester. Foremost among the charges against the state secretary is the accusation of unilaterally appointing an acting ward chairman following the demise of the previous chairman. This action, according to the ward executives, disregarded the established party structure and the authority of Congress-elected officials, constituting a breach of Article 21, Sections A, subsections ii, vi, and vii of the APC constitution. Further compounding the allegations against Mr. Avadja is the claim that he has failed to remit monthly dues to the party, a violation of Article 9, Section 9.2, Subsection ii.

The second suspended member, Mr. Sylvester, faces allegations of impersonating the Ahiaukwu Ward II chairman, a violation of Article 21, Section A, Subsection IV of the party’s constitution. This allegation raises questions about the motivations behind such impersonation and the potential implications for party operations and decision-making processes. The ward executives, by highlighting this alleged impersonation, indicate a concern for maintaining the integrity of their leadership structure and preventing unauthorized individuals from assuming positions of authority. The concurrent suspension of both the state secretary and a member for distinct alleged violations suggests a broader pattern of disregard for party regulations and internal processes.

In response to these alleged violations, the Ahiaukwu Ward 2 executives have established a seven-member disciplinary committee to thoroughly investigate the accusations against both Mr. Avadja and Mr. Sylvester. This committee will be tasked with gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and ultimately determining the veracity of the claims. The outcome of this investigation could have significant ramifications for the future of both suspended officials within the party. A finding of guilt could lead to further disciplinary actions, including expulsion, while exoneration would likely necessitate a reconciliation process within the ward and potentially the broader state party structure.

Beyond the immediate disciplinary measures, the ward executives have expressed their commitment to strengthening the party’s presence and influence within their jurisdiction. Their statement emphasizes the importance of adhering to the party’s constitution and enforcing discipline to ensure effective organization and electoral success. This focus on internal cohesion and adherence to rules suggests a recognition that internal disputes can undermine the party’s ability to compete effectively in elections. By emphasizing their dedication to party principles and constitutional adherence, the ward executives aim to project an image of unity and stability.

The suspensions of Mr. Avadja and Mr. Sylvester represent a significant development within the Abia State APC, potentially impacting the party’s internal dynamics and electoral prospects. The outcome of the disciplinary committee’s investigation will be crucial in determining the long-term consequences of this intra-party conflict. Furthermore, the ward’s emphasis on strengthening party structures and adhering to constitutional provisions signals a broader effort to address underlying issues and prevent future disputes. This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by political parties in maintaining internal cohesion and upholding democratic processes within their ranks. The ability of the Abia State APC to resolve this conflict effectively and address the underlying issues will play a vital role in its future success.
